The Indian Thread #20

Anni, RD CMU here :)

Plus one of the teachers at my school is an alum and she will be taking my interview. So  and :D

Thanks 16erdad
Can anybody answer my 1st q? Can a school teacher act as a counsellor?

Yeah I guess, I have asked my english teacher to be my counsellor :expressionless: But what I have heard from other people is that it’s preferable to have your principal as your counsellor.

Oh YAY! Thanks so much Veethi
Ive been worrying about this for so long :(

@16erdad- great! :)

One more nag on my head (please help!)-
I registered for one SAT sub test but added one more on test day. The proctor told me all adjustments are to be made online; she didnt do anything from her side. When i mailed collegeboard, they said id recieve an invoice and i had to pay the bill only once id gotten it.
Results are to be out in 10 days and i havent recieved the invoice yet! What do i do? PLEASE HELP :(

@Tizil- haha your emoticon is still making me laugh. Well thats pretty cool! :)

*That as in the fact that you have an alumni-teacher interviewing you

It is better to find one of those non-regular teachers to be your counselor.

Hey, is the app form to be snail-mailed? Though it says the process can be completed online, the form cant be filled out that way.
So the common app requirements are online, and the FORM is a written one?
Thanks :)

Which form?

This one- https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2012/2012PacketFY_download.pdf</a>
Sheesh this process is so annoying :/

IRB - Commonapp is designed such that you never have to mail anything unless you don’t have a choice.

You have pieces that are owned by individuals - the application is owned by you, the recommendations are owned by teachers, the school report and transcript are owned by the school. You are technically able to submit each of those pieces online. I would say you should submit your applications online and then figure out what your teachers and school want to do.

For our kid, the school and one of the teachers refused to do the work online. So we ended up downloading one teacher rec and the school report, turning over multiple copies of them to the teacher and school and allowed them be mailed directly (I know, we have lost control to monitor but thats the way it goes). However, the application itself was submitted online with payments, one of the teacher submitted the rec online and so that was distributed to colleges and once the colleges give accounts, we monitor to see the status of the other rec and school report.

^^That cleared a lot up, thanks so much :)

I did he same. All you have to do is call them when results are out. They will tell you your score against a credit card number that they can charge and the score will be added into your CB file.

If your school doesn’t have a counselor, get your principal to do the job. Every school has one. Do not get a school teacher to do it.

I mailed all my stuff since for me, it was just easier than getting my teachers to do it online.
What I did was give them all normal sized envelopes in which they put their reccos and sealed and returned to me/the principal. On the same day, the school transcript (in another sealed envelope with the school stamp) and the reccos were put in a BIG envelope and sealed in either principal’s or school official’s presence. These then were mailed on the same day.
Postage charges have to be paid by you. I paid ~30,000 INR for posting materials (apps+ FA dox). Use DHL or Fedex. You don’t want your precious materials to be lost. You can try Indian post, which is pretty reliable believe it or not (their speed post thingy-- they even give you a tracking number) but it takes much more time, so it is only an option if you’re done with ur apps wayyy in advance, say by Dec 15.
Try sending FA materials in same post as well. I made the mistake of forgetting about them until Jan 15 or so, and realized that many of my schools required different FA forms and had to mail them separately.

My principal is my counselor and she is ready to do the whole process online (transcript+school report+reco). Also my teachers have agreed to write their recos online using email accounts that I have made for them  . So I shouldn’t bother about snialmail. Right perfectpixie???

16erdad, from my past experience, CA isn’t really good with replying to e-mails about their application. Here’s what I think:

CEEB code is just to identify the college’s interaction with that school (how many students they have accepted from a particular school before)

One can still upload (or get the teachers to upload) relevant documents and send them through electronic mail.

Schools shouldn’t have a problem with the CEEB code being 0000, after all so many students world wide don’t have their schools listed in the CA.

The University of California deadline is coming close (30th November) for all those Berkeley and LA enthusiasts.

Ideally, your teacher recommendations should be in order and a first draft of most essays should be done. (Not that I am ideal :stuck_out_tongue: )

No top college other than GTech (No, GTech is not a top college) require you to convert your transcript to a GPA.

Bleh. I just like 7.

Please excuse the length of this post, I didn’t have the time to write a shorter one.

@Tizl: Thanks for the post.
And I am super far from ideal. No teacher recos. First drafts of only 2 essays. Where are you right now?

Is anyone here applying to UC Berkeley? Do we enter the term exam marks also or just the final exam marks? My school transcript for 9th shows three sets of marks : for quarterly, half-yearly, and final exams. Should I enter al the three sets of marks or just the final exam marks?

If this has been discussed somewhere on College Confidential already, I would appreciate a link. I searched a bit and did not find any.
Thanks in advance.

Hey, do the Univs contact the school to check the authenticity of the transcripts?? I mean, wouldnt that be a hectic process for the college admission department? Please be sure of ur sources when u anawer this!! My friend says that they only do it when they suspect some foul play!?
Ps, wanted to ask becoz was just curious! No wrong intentions meant! Lol
