Reed in Portland?, decent liberal arts school. Smal international population. Only your sat 1 counts no subject tests needed. You are hovering near the low 20 percentile mark of their admit pool.

Yeah Chimni, the one in Portland. It doesn’t participate in rankings; Reed is miles better than just “decent” =D

I know, my SAT I needs major pulling up. I’ll make that happen in Oct.

Where are you applying?

Fountai, I’m an MBA, from a top-5 business school. Live in Delhi now and help kids apply to good colleges in US. Trying to clear all the misinformation that exists! I finished my UG a long time back :)

If you guys are screwed , then what about me ?? … In all my practice tests I had a score of 2200 to 2300 and when the real scores came (June 4rth) , I am at 1820 !! I have great GPAs and a very similar EC to that of CEMavrick’s in computers and electronics … But this is the greatest stepping stone as far I am concerned !! I am taking both Oct and Nov SAT (already registered) , and I am all set to raise this to a perfect score !! So thats it guys , be positive !! So btw what are my chances for UIUC and Purdue with this score ???

If my display name weren’t tizil, it would have been ‘thepositive’. :D

Good luck for the perfect score!
Why do you think there was such a huge difference between practice test scores and the the real thing?

Nervousness? Or was it something else?

Please answer, as this may prove to be a caution for the rest of us out here :)

His ECs are mediocre because nothing stands out. You can add responsibilities that are exaggerated, and they still wont impress the Adcoms at the top 10 schools. The way to stand out through ECs is to either have an international distinction or have unusual interests for your background.

Sure, no problem. Send it anytime.

What do you think I’ve added that seems to be exaggerated?
:0
Tizil and I both know each other IRL, and he knows what I’ve been doing all along, too.
I’m not trying to defend myself against criticism, it’s just that it’s weird that one thinks I’ve added extra stuff just for the heck of it.
I’m not applying to the top10 anyway, grades aren’t good enough.

Lol, chill. I meant, you can, not you have.

You can get into several if you stand out by being unusual. A couple examples from Stanford’s Class of 2015 that I’m not sure I should post, but what the hell: a caucasian female accomplished in rifle shooting and interested in engineering, and an asian male accomplished in theatre and interested in the humanities. Get it now? :)

But I would do what interests me rather than trying to be unusual just for the heck of it.

@Tizil : I discussed with a few and all of them told me that it’s due to pressure and nervousness and more over everyone I talked had written e SAT atleast two times and had scored only around 1800-1900 even when they got a practise score of 2300 … But in their second try ,they have easily attained 2050-2200 . … So as far as I know ,this is sheer Nervousness … I even wrote the whole section 3 in the section 2 column with the other questions ajd had to rub everything and I seriously doubt ,whether I lost the marks in that whole section . Hence I am giving for Hand score verification !! My advise is ,be as cool as possible and also make sure you have an opportunity to write it once more if you screw the test (for the first time takers) lll … BTW WHAT ABOUT MY CHANCES TO UIUC AND PURDUE WITH THIS SCORE (JUST TO KNOW , I AM REETAKING ANYWAY)

@PrincetonDreams- I have heard that schools like Stanford do entertain students with special talents but dont you think then too many indians would be entering stanford every year then, plus i dont thnk that more than 4-6 indians go to stanford every year. I think your idea is more applicable to americans, probably less for internationals.
I would definetly respect your opnion on this!

@thepositve- That score is actually potent to get you into uiuc and purdue…only if you have other components of your app. well-balanced. Its obvious that anyone would tend to retake SAT with that score…but dont expect too much buddy…SAT is often unpredictable!!

Hello, folks!

2016 hopeful here. Just joined CC.
Taken SAT twice : 1980->2170
Will take the subject tests in October.
CGPA in X : 9.6
Applying for Computer Science Major in YPSD, UCs, UMich, MIT, Cornell , GTech, U. of Illinois, Brown, Columbia.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you :)

Ahh PD ever the optimist I disagree with you on the quality of Maverick’s ECs. I dont think they’re that mediocre. Of course having stellar ECs wont have a detrimental effect on your application, but I think the importance of ECs might be a little exaggerated. Just as you pointed out about the admits into Stanford '15. To all the kids here, US admissions is really very random; even if you have astronomical achievements you can be looked over because someone else looked more “interesting”. However, this arbitrary nature of admitting is normally restricted to the so-called top schools since they receive a barrage of stellar applications. SAT score aside, I think Mav has a very good chance of making to UIUC/CMU. Actually even with a 2010 I think you can make it to UIUC at the very least.

Oh and PD, congratulations on Oxford. Which college btw?

'16er here!

Nice to meet y’all.

Is the thread dead ? :O

No, mav. It’s not dead yet ;)

So I am not the only one who thinks there is less activity here :p

Where are you all thinking about applying to college?

Maybe its not so active cause admissions are still pretty far away.

“plus i dont thnk that more than 4-6 indians go to stanford every year”

17-18 Indians are going this year apparently.
