Alea, grad school is too far away for me to start thinking about. Most probably, it won’t be from India. Though I intend to pursue my studies till the highest level (doctoral), top public jobs in India require that one has completed their undergraduate. About the disconnection from Indian reality, I don’t think 4 years will matter much ( though I don’t disregard the power of the Indian economy to transform tremendously in four years ).

Then, there’s always study abroad programs. Studying abroad in India wouldn’t be much … “abroad” ;)

I dont know, if i DO do my UG in the US, it would make a lot more sense to do my PG and PhD there too. Not too much chance of coming back for those. Although a UG abroad looks pretty bleak so far. @Akash- its not like everybodys ganging up against you like tizil said. If you are on the forum, its mostly for serious purposes, although we all like to indulge in banter. You need to keep that in mind and not make banter the focus. You have a year to go, so maybe you are taking the forum too lightly. Either way, stay on if you have meaningful contributions to make, or valid queries.

@Tizil- Are you my lost twin or something? I intend to do the same thing. I intend to get a US education (at a top college if I can make it) and then come back here and work for the government. I mean I can’t stand a basic 9-5 job even if it’s high paying. Things have always been about making an impact. Doing something so you can leave a legacy behind. Sad thing is to join Indian politics here you have to have connections which I don’t.

wow! calm down akash! chill… and yeah, i second AleaJactaEst (obv in a positive way)… and with no offence, had i been spending the time equals to what u spend on CC in a day, am pretty sure i would have definitely got a 2300+! no offence meant!
OK, so i have finally reached my SAT-PREP-SATURATION POINT?! gosh, HELP ME NOW!
all of a sudden, am attracted to harvard  daim, thats school is GORGEOUS!!
hey guys, u applying to JHU?

norew I suggest you stop hankering after a specific college. You’re only setting yourself up for disappointment. You have no idea what H is going to be like or if you’re even going to like it if you went there.

Pasadena is real peaceful and honestly a fantastic place to live. Caltech is rather tough and the work never seems to end >.< I do hope it’ll be rewarding at the end though. And no Caltech is a lot more intense than portrayed in TBBT, those guys are already researchers so its chill for them ;)

yeah, work for undergrads must be tougher. And if you don’t mind me asking, what are you studying there? Engineering or pure science? Plus it’s silly of me to ask, but what do you people at Caltech think about the faster than light particles? was the exp. correct? I am asking because half the newspapers say this and half that. the opinion of the people at caltech would be more accurate.

And how close is LA? Can you just pop there and watch a tbbt or himym shooting, if you get time from work that is. i can’t imagine how awesome that would be.

Um I am currently hoping to study engineering here, but our engineers are very qualified physicists as well. Regardless of major everyone is required to take almost 2 years of pure Physics courses and almost 2 years of pure Math courses. So yeah im lucky im here cause i love Physics. Actually I might even do Applied Physics instead in which case obviously more physics need be done. I dont think there’s a general poll about what everyone thinks about FTL behaviour. Id imagine most people to be excited about it though and a second experiment agrees pretty well with the first one, though an independent authority needs to verify it further.

And yeah LA is actually decently close. Its a bit of a walk to the nearest metro, but thereafter you can be in LA in 20 mins or so :)

canhazphysics: 2190 isn’t bad. It gives you a good enough chance at all places. But I agree it could have been better, had you not gone through all of that at the test centre. Still no good worrying about what would have happened. Just make your essays awesome and you will get in a great place. Good luck :)

Thanks Karan. I was thinking of sending my UC app to UCLA and UCB as well, but I guess I’ll prolly not waste 7k on that now. Still have my fingers crossed for UCSB prays

Hello guys !!
I cannot make it to US universities without any financial aid or scholarships .
So , What if I have a score of 2000 in SAT I and apply to universities which accept students with scores around 1800 . I have average transcripts and above average ECs.
Will this increase my chances for financial aids or scholarships ?

@perfectprashant - It will be tough to get FA or scholarship with those scores as there are only the top 6-7 colleges that offer FA to internationals. Your best bet might be to get student loans/scholarships from India ? Also explore completing your undergrad in India and then looking to the US for graduate studies.

Hmm , The point is if you talk to an American who is into engineering , you would understand that they consider Georgia Techs engineering equal to MIT’s and Stanford’s. In many places you can notice that GT has been overlapped with MIT and Duke . Now about the SAT Score , actually don’t go by the college board and internet statistics , its outdated . GT’s mean is somewhere between 1950-2200 . So thats not bad and moreover SAT scores doesn’t really show anything . First time I was too lazy and I just went and wrote my SAT …and I almost flunked . Second time , I prepared for two weeks and then gave a shot … I got a huge improvement …so its all about luck , practice etc.

And yes GT’s SAT score is lower than MIT and CalTech but the reason is obvious . GT is a state / public school and they do have priority for State students. So if a student is top 10% in his school , even if his SAT’s are very avg , GT ought to take him ,not just because they are compelled but rather they know SAT’s doesnt actually show anything … Yet another reason is GT has a bigger undergraduate body and they have to take a lot more of students …

Now let me take General National Ranking . Yes GT is ranked behind in the National Ranking , but the single reason is GT is Technological Institution ie Pure Engineering . But Nat Rankings considers all departments and as all of us would know GT would fare very bad in those … So thats the reason why its behind in General Rankings . And dont worry about peer group if you are going to GT , because it has the toughest undergraduate curriculum and so people who join GT finally are excellent students and if at all poor students come in , they usually drop out after 1 yr due to GT;s stressful curriculum !

Basically it would be great if you do your BS from GT ( a public university ) and do your MS from Stanford or MIT unless you have a scholarship from those private universities …

That said and done , I am waiting for my decision from Cornell and MIT hopefully … Already accepted to Georgia Tech :)
