Someone will pay YOU for advice? O.O

Haha, so true. :)

princetondreams- hi, youre in columbia, arent you? can i PM you sometime if ive got questions? :)

Hi PrincetonDreams,

Just curious : What was the reason for you to choose Columbia over Stanford? Is there anything bad about Stanford that we should be aware of?

Sorry buddy. I won’t be answering any questions about specific schools.

Both are great schools. Just go where you’ll be happy and where you’ll get to study what you want to. That’s it.

But dont covet a school and place too much emphasis on your determination of what is a good fit. The interwebs only help you so far. Dont have dream schools.

To those asking questions about Columbia vs Stanford vs any other Ivy, all of these are great schools. You have to find the “right fit”. Do you want to be in NYC or Palo Alto? how is the weather? Where do you get the most aid? Princeton vs Harvard? Boston or NJ? For that matter IVy vs Non-ivy. All the schools here have something to offer. There is really not anything bad. Every school has their own culture, be aware that Ivy type schools are also full of overachievers and competitive. Compare it to going IIT vs NIT or even IIT vs BITS.

You will get a good education anywhere. Compare the programs in each school - go to their website. For example, CS and Engg majors chose Stanford over Columbia, or tend to like UC Berkeley/CMU. Business majors/ECon etc may be more Columbia oriented.

As for the student culture, I am sure it will be competitive at competitive schools. I will be honest and say it is not easy being in a new culture and sometimes you have to go to a school in an area where you may have relatives in the area. All in all, if you are prepared to be away from home for extended period and can afford it, any of these schools will give you a good education.

Also if you go to CC Home and search for Stanford vs Columbia, you will find many threads on this topic. The above link is only one of those threads.

Gotta disagree with you on that one man.

Your top choice/dream school should be the school that’s the best in your desired major. If it’s also in an area that you like (rural New Hampshire, for instance :p), then all the better. The happiest people I know here are the ones who are in the right major/university-division for their interests. But they’re also the snobbiest, so, yeah, idk lol.

I hope I can link this site, if you are not looking at Ivy, to get a more diverse down to earth student body, these are really good schools too. Unfortunately international aid is limited here.
@anailways - can trust you to find those links
That would be great for someone who is lucky to choose columbia vs stanford.

Since they all aren’t getting cured at the psychiatrists’ places, they need unique insight. Enter I. Told ya it was a great idea. :D

^ ROFL
choo chweet, worrying about unhappy ones @ 3am! <3

PD perhaps my phrasing was misconstrued. I intentionally made it sweeping to reiterate what ive always maintained. I dont mean to say dont research into the schools you are likely to like best. All im saying is dont covet schools too much cause you honestly dont know what life will be like if you go there. Most people dont get into their dream schools and are severely disappointed. Your dream school is where you finally end up. Thats all there is to it :)

@ChubbyCheeks : People just don’t know how good a heart I have. I care about those Ivy League kids even though I haven’t got in yet. Poor souls, how they need me.

Hi fall2016parent

Remember what they always said ‘practice makes a man perfect’ so that is what happens when one has been Googling, researching, CCing, comparing for over two years on college applications. One figures out ways to get info, it is all there. Thank you anyway.

^ we are all in this rat race together. ;)

I am applying at MIT (Regular Action) this year.

For school results, I am top of the class and I have roughly 85% marks, pretty good considering they are of pre-boards.

In exams I am giving, TOEFL and SAT II, Math (I & II) and Physics.

SAT Subject tests, I can handle but I am a little worried about TOEFL. My English is good but some of the sample questions from speaking section like “Describe your first day of school?” just catch me off guard and I require a little more time to form my answer, more than they give. I have TOEFL exam in 9 days. I am giving SAT Subject tests on 28 Jan. (The first time I am giving either exam, my decision to apply at MIT came late).

My teacher’s are very impressed with me so I am not worried about the their recommendations.

I will schedule my interview tomorrow. And work on the essays after giving my exam of TOEFL.

Any advice? Has any of you applied before? Or given the interview? How was it? Anything else I should know of?

Thanks!

Hi friends, anybody for Columbia ED?? decisions expected by 3am (in approx 4 hours). Good Luck to all.

" giving my exam of TOEFL."
Just a pet peeve of mine
The correct English is - “take an exam” (not give). My GRE 101 :)
