The Indian Thread #20

^all indians seem to write “give an exam”. Is this the colloquial way of saying “take an exam” in indian languages ?

^yep, pretty much!

We Indians do that a lot nah. Blame hindi for it.

“Exam diya kya?”=> “have you GIVEN the exam?”

Stanford’s decision in another 10 hours!

"Admission Decisions to be Released Earlier Than Expected
December 9, 2011

Restrictive Early Action applicants will be sent their admission decisions beginning at 3pm today. Decisions will be sent via email beginning at 3pm (Pacific Time), several days ahead of schedule. The admission committee finalized its selection process earlier than anticipated and in an effort to quell anxiety among applicants, parents, counselors, and alumni, Dean Shaw made the decision to release decisions today, December 9. Please understand that while we will begin to send decisions at 3pm (Pacific Time), it may take some time before your decision reaches you. Decision emails will not reach every applicant immediately at 3pm. It may take several hours before decisions are received. If we encounter any technical glitches or your internet service provider blocks our email, delivery may be interrupted. As a result, we respectfully ask that you do not call or write to the Office of Undergraduate Admission to request your admission decision. We will not begin releasing decisions over the phone until Wednesday of next week.

We understand and empathize with your anxiety right now and we will do everything in our power to ensure that your admission decision reaches you as soon as possible. Your patience is greatly appreciated. "

heyy i just wanna know if anybody could tell me how many Indians (with name if u can provide) made it to MIT this year for the class of 2015 ???

Based on MIT statistics it is between 7 and 10.

Nope. There were only 4 Indians accepted.

Source?

/10char

My MIT EC.

and how many applied ?? … were they all some kinda medal winners (who got selected) ??

Is there a link for this My MIT EC?

If you go throrugh their listings for 4 years, the numbers have gone up from 28 to current 33. Divide that by 4 and you get 8+. However since the total shot up by 5 in the last couple of years, it seems like more were admitted.

[Enrollment Statistics: MIT Office of the Registrar](<a href=“Statistics & Reports | MIT Registrar”>Statistics & Reports | MIT Registrar)

2011-12 33
2010-11 29
2009-10 28
2008-09 31
2007-08 19
2006-07

Each year some graduate and some get added. So it is not the difference from year to year but difference + how many were admitted in 2007.

Regarding those MIT numbers listed at the links texaspg provided: Note that it can include children of Indians (with Indian citizenship) working in places like Gulf countries, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia etc., and not just students who studied in India. The only students with Indian citizenship who are excluded in those numbers are U.S. permanent residents with Indian passport.

So, the actual number of Indian students going to MIT after doing their high school studies in India could indeed be 3-4 per year and hence what your EC told may not be contradictory to what the numbers at the MIT URL suggest.

You may not get any more finer grained data than that. I don’t think it is really worth researching this issue any more than that. Just assume it is going to be very selective and plan accordingly :).

Yeah. In the end- ONLY 4 Indians who had their high-schooling in India got selected.
This is a fixed no. This year too they will select maximum 4 out of a pool of 2000+ applicants(this is again what my EC told).
So it is damn selective.

It’s been a long time, hasn’t it? How is everyone’s applications going?

Hi Tizil. Long time indeed. Where have you been ?

Just lurking around  Applications are going smoothly, (at least for now :stuck_out_tongue: )
Did you get your Harvard decision? If not, I wish you the best of luck. If yes, then I still wish you the same :)

How are your applications going, Alea?

Harvard decisions will come out in 2 days !
I am almost done with my other apps although it takes really a lot of efforts to prepare them. How about you? any admission yet ?

1 day now, Alea! Wish you the best of luck!
Nope, none yet. Since all my applications are RD, I’ll have to wait till March (± some days) to hear from all my universities.

Yes, it does take a lot of effort. I become especially nervous right before pressing the submit button. It’s the point of no return :p

Why is your location the moon ? any articular symbol behind that?
