The Indian Thread #21

@idream oh thank god another girl on CC :-D

Aaaand. My physics went great, halfway through felt too sick, and ended up not giving math :frowning:
Was it toooo easy? :P

I might give the ACT’s as well.

Mrinal, your taking ACT again? But 35 is already awesome :D

(probably) taking ACT as well.
How easy is it?( when compared to SAT1s?)

@North: That’s because I already registered for the June ACT before I got my scores. :p

The ACT is NOT easy, compared to the SATs. I regret this attitude, even if how subjective it may be. Instead of asking here, why don’t you give the practice papers a go??

@Mrinal,
I’m tad confused.

By themselves the ACT has four sections- Reading, Math, Science, & English + Optional Essay.
So does ACT by itself equate to SAT + Subject tests, only SAT?

ACT is more aligned with the school material. It is also advantageous for students from India because SAT has 1600 points (2/3rd) covering English only while ACT covers 50% in Math and Science.

ACT goes deeper and expects knowledge with speed as primary criterion while SAT depends more on trick questions. People who do well on SAT usually also do well on ACT but people who are more into sciences tend to do well on ACT.

They each need separate preparation since they are testing different aspects of knowledge.

There are some advantages to taking ACT. Several schools including at least 3 Ivies waive the two subject score requirement if you take ACT.

Ok.
For stuff related to ACT, I’ve heard that ACT English is easier than SAT1 eng and Math has the same standard.
So it leaves it to Science Section, right?

@mrinal: comment and suggest ?
1-how Long did u prepare for ACT?
2-books that you did?
3-strategies and tips?
4- what is a good, decent and a not so good score? (especially for ivys)

Easy is a double edge sword. 3 wrong and you get a 32 and it is pretty easy to miss 4 questions because you run out of time.

There are a lot more questions to get through.

People who are academically very strong get perfect scores in US.

hey, anyone got some online act practice papers? i tried the PR one, but for some reason it doesn’t open on my computer. o.O

Tizil, that American History requirement is waived ONLY if the student leaves the country after studying.

I plan to stay on, seeing as Silicon Valley is the international hub of CS. Hence I need to fulfill the requirement somehow.

Don’t want to waste courses at UCB, so I thought I’d give the SAT Subject Test

hey '16ers?
do you have any idea how to contact pefectpixie?
tizil? ^
i wanted to ask her about some stuff.
if someone has her email, PM me?
thanks a gazillion.

Yep, I need her email too. Her PM box is full. Someone told me that she majored in Physics.

North, Math was easy but its just my opinion. I may be a little biased since I love Math (much much more than chem :p).

Hey guys, was wondering, how many subject tests is a good idea to take? I took 2 - Math 2 and Physics. Debating whether to take Chem or Not.

My daughter is applying for next fall, I can make out mrinal2207, idream17, xnorth22 are are also applying, are there many more. How do we know the 2017ers

sramas, stick to this thread and you’ll find a lot more '17ers coming up. :)

List of 2017ers.
(as far as I know)
mrinal2207
idream17
north
rew2402
anvesh95
suddu
Ppayas
AdityaP
arvindch

Hope this helps.

Normally, most colleges colleges require 2 or 3 SAT subject test scores along with the ACT. As texas already mentioned, only 3 ivies allow the ACT to substitute for the SAT IIs: so I think you should give 3 SAT subject tests just to be safe. :)

I studied 2 weeks for the ACTs, but I have seen many people on the ACT forum preparing for months at once. I don’t think anyone can answer this question better than you yourself, for you are the once who needs to do the prep.

I used PR’s “Cracking the ACT” and ACT’s Official Red Book. The Red Book has 5 real ACT tests, so I think you should get that and get a feel of how the real test is.

The most important factor in the ACT is time management, so I think you should take about 3-4 practice tests before the real one. However, here are the common test taking strategies I found useful.

English

[ul]
[] The shortest, simplest answer is usually the right one. This is because the ACT makers like to throw in a lot of extra junk to confuse you.
[
] Most of the time, If an answer choice is in the passive voice, it’s wrong.
[li] Always trust your inner ear. When you read something wrong, your inner ear should catch it. So, always read the option twice before answering but keep track of time.[/li][/ul]

Reading

[ul]
[]Don’t waste your time reading the questions before you read the passage. Not only does this waste precious time, but your retention of the passage will be worse when you do read it since you’ll be distracted from trying to keep all of those questions in your head.
[]To find answers faster and more accurately, I recommend the “key word” method. TO find the key word, use the questions itself. If you find a word in the question that jumps out(not literally) and the word does not come in the passage often, that is the key word.
[li]Once you have got the key words, skim through the passage and once you get a general idea that is brought up in the passage, you should be fine with the questions. [/li][/ul]

I would say that if you get a ACT score of 32 or greater, you should be fine as Harvard’s median ACT score is a 32.

Once the CommonApp for this year goes online, more and more 17’ers will start coming up. Just wait and watch.
Just out of curiosity, where is your D applying to??
