ABCD - American born confused desis.. I didnt mean that in a deragatory manner..Should have used "Indian Americans"..

Just wanted to know if there were more Indian Americans at Brown as opposed to people coming from India...

wow i dont know anyone here anymore :)
how's app prep going?
Lakshya, what high school are you from? I applied from Alain, UAE and it was pretty insane...CC helps a lot!!!
Shoot me a message if you guys need any help! :)

Nice to see another Dubaiite on this site (Lakshya and myself are the only ones I've seen till date) :) What was the application process like for you Laila? (You're the first MIT student I've seen who was in dubai)

Well, It was after seeing ABCD that i really got interested in applying to US.
Indians are ORM at Brown and like all other places most of them are Desis.

Jai: Congrats on your first post here;)

I'm from Our Own. Any kind of help is always appreciated. Thanks :)

Hey..

Great to see fellow dubaiites...I was in Indian High and moved when I was in the 10th. I moved to the US two years ago and am now a senior here in the US.

Hey laila, if I may ask, which universities did you apply to and what are you in now?

Abhishiv, that was my motivation at first too but having spent some time with quite a few ABCD's, they're too American for my taste... Ofcourse this is a generalization.. I have a ABCD friends who are great and its a lot of fun hanging out with them but with the others, I really dont feel like I am talking with a desi! Am hoping for a good mix of ABCd's and local desis!

ORM, I assume are Indians who come from India? If so, thats good to know that they have a good mix of desis!

By saying that ABCD was my motivation i meant that i got motivated from the University(UC) in the movie.
ORM means Over represented Minority(Indian,Chinese,Koreans); URM means Under represented Minority(Hispanic etc).

There a very few Indians at Brown who have passed out from a High School in India, most of them are Indian Americans.

A lot of people from Dubai ... lol ;)

k_twin : There aren't any undergrads at MIT from Dubai, I'm the only one right now :-/ But there are a couple of Indian grad students who went to high school in Dubai but elsewhere in the US for undergrad. It's nice to see you guys here :)

The app process was the usual I guess..decent SATs, good essays..tons of ECs/leadership stuff..I did the Cambridge O and A levels and thankfully did well on those too. I guess the only "remarkable" thing about my app would've been the fact that I didnt take courses that were offered in school, but chose the ones that I liked and basically studied all by myself.. :) (it was hard! but it paid off beautifully!)

Lakshya, I went to OOEHS Alain for 2 years! I loved that school...but then they kicked me out lol. well, yeah literally - I had completed a 3 yr course in 2 yrs n they didnt know what to do with me haha. Life is weird.

I wouldn't know where to start, so if you guys ever have any questions about intl admissions or app specifics...or MIT admissions in particular, feel free to shoot me an email or a private message. I'll hopefully be around before the term gets nasty.. =)

Jai: I applied to quite a handful of univs and had a few acceptances too. I chose to come to MIT. I'll be majoring in Economics and Applied Mathematics/Finance. Where in the US are you?

Its good to know that 'normal' people also get into MIT. ;)

hehe absolutely! but there is still a catch....MIT's admission process has become really humane...(i hope you guys read the blogs) and thats what they expect from applications too, now. Very compelling essays...you'll surprised how trivial SAT scores are when it comes to MIT admissions! (esp the verbal and writing scores lol)

Definitely, the blogs and the generally "natural", real nature of the MIT admissions site's part of what has made me attracted to MIT. (I check the site at least once every few days :) ) UChicago's also started an admissions blog, Cornell engineering's also doing the same, but it doesn't feel as brilliant as the MIT blogs.

Umm just a general advice for the people here who need Financial Aid and are internationals.. please apply to some colleges outside of the top 25 because the top 25 are a tossup even for the best of applicants. So apply to places where you are sure to get in and which also cater to your taste. I am sure you will be able to find some of em...Its better to have few extra acceptances than none at all.

Hey Laila,

I live in Connecticut ( near New Haven ). Could you please check your pm?

What if you are applying to a need-blind college, does fin aid still make a difference there?

I am not going to apply for fin aid, but few of my friends are and they want to know. I have heard contradicting stories about the 'blindness' of need-blind colleges when it comes to intls.

Does applying for aid in any way hinder our chances of admission?

Look at at this way Lakshya...
THe only need blind colleges out there are HYPM...and these are alrady like the toughest to get into..and even though they are needblind its not at all predictable whether you can get in or not.
