The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

Hi guyz ,
Just wanna ask ur opinions...

Like a good Indian college kid (11th-12th) i bunked college both years
and the result was a 55% in 12th (86% in 10th Maharashtra State Board).
So I thought of going abroad(US) for studies.
I am appearing for SAT I in October and SAT II M2 and Phy in November.
My expected scores (Considering my practice test scores in Blue book and Collegeboard Online Course) :
SAT I 2250+
SAT II M2 800 Phy 750+
My intended major :
Computer Engg. (General)
At:
UCB(!)
U Mich Ann Arbor
U Illinois UC

Do u think I have any chance at these ?? ( Considering my 55%)

[ BTW what is my estimated GPA considering my 55% in HSC ? ]

Could u suggest more schools which can offer some scholarship but must be good for Comp Engg...
T h a n k s ~

TwistR It's more than waking up one morning and thinking of applying to US. It's highly highly unlikely that a 2400 in SAT could offset your class rank, and whoever told you that you can get into a good engg. school by just scoring high on the SAT is a liar.
There's no need to calculate the GPA for Indians, we are judged by the % we scored. Try applying in the UK and Canada, you could get into some of the good universities if you could pay the whole tuition fee.

I suggest you ignore abhishiv's comment. As an international student you need not calculate your GPA. The admission's process is not about numbers only. There are a lot of other fators besides the SAT and GPA namely, teacher recs, personal essays, extra-curricular activities, financial situation, etc...

Even though your 12th percentage is on the lower side the scales don't tip too heavely if you can get the SAT scores you think you will achieve.

Have you finished school? Because if you haven't then you can try to get a good percentage in your mid-terms.

Having said that, 55% is indeed very low.

Give me a break Lakshya, The factors you have mentioned(Essays,Recs,ECs) are taken into account if the adcoms are confident that the applicant could take the load during the next 4 years.
The most important factors in admissions are 1)GPA 2)ECs/Essays 3)SAT.
(see <a href="http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000073.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000073.htm</a>)</p>

Just to throw some light on the discussion, I will give you my own example. I moved to US after finishing 10 grade in India. I got 85% on the SSC exam(Mahrashtra board). When my school converted my grades, they gave me a 4.0 GPA. On top of that, I got a 4.0+ GPA during my junior year.

can i interupt for just a second. thanx

why did you suddenly decide to make a 15th thread??

TiT # 14 was locked by the admin

why???????

It had so many pages that the mods found it difficult to monitor it.

okay

i see ,thanks

The #2 most important factor you have mentioned is the same as the ones I have mentioned. Learn to read.

Secondly and most importantly this forum has been set up to help people. Not to discourage them from applying. By telling them that they have absolutely no chance because of one grade is in poor taste. Take your sarcasm and pessimism somewhere else, it has no place here.

First of all i never said that essays weren't important, i just said that your grades need to convince the adcoms that you are competent for a place.
Esaays Recs SAT all come later.

The fact that you advised him that his SAT score could offset his grades just makes me laugh. SAT is the last thing that comes to my mind as a International. Colleges are now looking at SAT in a totally different context as opposed to 4-5 years back.

"Because of one grade", grades 11 and 12 are nothing for you. What a joke, Whatever you do Lakshya please don't ever think of becoming a adcom.

Secondly i wasn't discouraging him, i was telling him the facts. A good critic helps to make right choice, and whatever i was doing at least i wasn't keeping him in a illusion as you did.

It may be discouraging for you but not for me.

I have been on this forum longer than you i know what this forum is all about.

Lastly i would like to advice you to please leave this forum or stop targeting other TiTers.

hey calm down ppl...just a difference in opinion...

This will be my final post about this topic.

He never mentioned his 11th grades, so yes it is just one grade. About you being a critic, if you're not an adcom you can never tell about anyone's chances much less tell them they will not get in.

If this forum is not about helping people, please enlighten me as to what it is all about.

If you think that SATs are less important now than they were 4-5 years back, you are just ignorant.

TwistR mentioned somwhere on CC that he just managed to pass his 11 and 12. As his dream of getting into IIT was shattered his father's friend suggested him to try applying to US that's why he is here. Whats' more his SAT tutor told him that just getting 2250+ would be sufficient to get into a good engg. school with scholarship. This is what every so called student counselor at the corner tricks students and parents into believing. I was infact saving him and other ignorant students from this Phishing.

For ECs his only activty during the last two years was Computer Gaming which I would not consider as a EC.

The colleges he had mentioned were definitely out of his reach. Hence I suggested him to apply to Cash Strapped British Universities as he was willing to fully fund his studies.

As far as CC is concerned I am visiting this site from Grade IX (2004). I never joined at that time as I had no queries/had something to say.

of post on TiT #14

abhishiv 55
Lakshya M 30

(I am surely ashamed but I was forced into this Cheap game by Lakshya)

As far as TiT is concerned as someone said it’s not just a place to help each other, it’s a place to express opinions which I was doing.

And if you would like to say that high SAT could offset you GPA or Grades i can't help you. Think about it, a good GPA takes 4 years to earn v/s 2-3 months for gaining good score on SAT. Instead of running away like a coward I would like that you back your statements with proof(if you have).

Take a look at <a href="http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?ID=26006%5B/url%5D">http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?ID=26006</a></p>

Lakshya First announcing that this is your last post and then editing your post five minutes after is surely disgracefully.

Um... can I say that there's little purpose to continuing this abrasive discussion here. If there is any conflict between anybody, then it can be resolved through PMs or any other means. Ultimately, I feel that whats going on here has little benefit to TwistR or to anyone else. Additionally for any new members to CC who read this thread, this is absolutely the worst impression to give them. The Indian Thread's a forum for discussion, for argument, for help, but not for personal attacks or accusations. My two cents.

Finally some sense...Everything can be done peacefully in a nice friendly helpful tone...not this condescending ********

Yeah, I kind of didn't like the way things turned out. I apologise to abhishiv for being so brazen.

@K_twin, wasup : I agree with you guys, the discussion/argument was more than likely to discourage anyone new to post in TiT.

cheers
10 char

well having read all the posts above, I certainle believe that one shold not just turn down ur chances because of a yearly grade.... use ur essays wisely to explain to the adcoms what went wrong... BEST OF LUCK
