The Individualized Major

Are any of you planning on doing an Individualized/Self Designed Major at your school? If so, what are you planning and what do you want to do with it later on?

I wanted to do one so badly in a topic that would make Oprah proud, but in the end, pragmatism won out and I’m opting for a safe major.

The quality of seld-designed major criteria and support available really differs from college to college. At many (maybe the bigger stae-ish Us), you’ll just be doing a smattering of classes and get a laughable Bachelor of General Studies. The criteria for that is really irrelevant to your academic inquiries and growth. It’s just like, do 10 credit hours of Math, do 50 credit hours of any social science… Highly impersonal.

The cinch for me came from reading that even in Brown (arguably the liberal arts mecca), only approx 6 students a year did a self-designed major. Case closed for me :)

Yeah, I started to do more research and figured I’d be better off doing a safe major. I am going to a big state U, and they offer a lot of courses in the majors I’m thinking about which is what led me into wanting to self design, but I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry even after an interesting four years in this economy X_X

But I’m glad to know I wasn’t alone thinking about doing this!
