The Infamous Waitlist

Nobody...lol

Either waitlisted or accepted, but most likely the former!

Waitlisted.......

Where are all the people who were rejected? Did they waitlist everyone they didn't accept? It sure seems like it.

Lots of people probably wouldn't want to post rejection information. Also, if you think about it, most CC members are strong applicants so it's likely that more of them will be the waitlisted ones and not rejected ones.

I already got into a comparable private school in my home state and they're being quite nice to me

Mallomar got into freakin Duke! No need for WUSTL.

ahhhh I wish I got into DUKE!!!! Congrats mallomar!

Thanks, all this news is really coming so fast isn't it?

aww brand, don't put WashU down that much compared to Duke lol! Duke was my number one choice then I decided against applying over WashU and Northwestern because they fit me better...easily comparable schools. Give it credit! But even so, I'd probably take the Duke offers too if I were Mallomar!

Oh no no I obviously respect WashU as well or I wouldn't have even applied ;) But I mean, she's gotten into Duke already so a waitlist at WUSTL is no big deal.

And for the record, I would NEVER EVER go to Duke. :) Too conservative.

did duke already send decisions out??

funfetti,

OMG... MallomarCookie.. you received a likely letter from DUKE and was waitlisted at Wash U? mutters to myself that is beyond ridiculous. Congrats on your acceptance to Duke :D

It's all good...Wash U just has different standards and I don't meet them

I received an early write from Williams, a likely letter from Duke, and a likely letter from Northwestern. But I got wait listed at WashU. I scrolled through the RD decisions for WashU and was just so shocked by the number of seemingly qualified applicants who got wait listed. I understand that WashU may have different standards in picking students for its class, but my lord, it's pretty scary to see such a large number of people on a wait list.

I'd already posted the following. Sorry for the repeat. I just feel like I want to expose the smart game WashU is playing. :)

That WashU waitlists just about everyone not accepted helps to lower their acceptance rate, which is factored into US News ranking, while shielding themselves from the risk of under-enrolling. They are going to sit and wait; in the event of not having enough admits matriculating, they can turn to the large group of waitlist (that they waitlist so many should guarantee a large enough group staying on it) and take advantage of the very high yield in that group.

On the other hand, if they rejected most of those not accepted like most schools do, they would have needed to admit a larger pool (hence higher acceptance rate) of students to protect themselves against the yield which has been on the low side compared to its peers.

So WashU is simply playing very smart.

I lost a lot of respect for them, honestly. It's just cruel to send out so many waitlist offers when they KNOW they'll never need that many places.

waitlisted here, deferred from penn and michigan... COME ON COLLEGES MAKE A DECISION!

As is posted on another thread the waitlist is not as big as folks think. Do not think that everybody posts here. You might want to look at the ranking that show (ecluing MIT and Caltech) WashU iis the 4th most selective school. Given the large number of those with big stats who just think they can throw in an app and consider it some sort of automatic or a sfety it is obvious there will be many unhappy folks. Since it seems that many say they put the school low on their list, the wait listing should not bother them--except for a bruised ego. Anybody who thinks that getting into Duke or any other school makes them a "for sure" to get in WashU or any other top school is being a bit naive. There are a ton of good candidates, many chasing the same places. My S was with a bunch of students who all insisted that everybody who went EA to MIT got deferred. It seemed that way but of course it was not. By the way, from my teaching experience my sense has always been that it is esier to get into NU than WashU ---sorry Sam.

I understand WashU's selectivity, but I can't seem to understand what standard they use to admit applicants. I'm not extremely disappointed by the waitlist, considering I have a Dartmouth likely and an Amherst early write... but if it's not yield protection, then applying to WashU is truly crapshoot.

I think we all need a reality check these days. Kids growing up with the “high self esteem movement” don’t realize there are thousand of thousand excellent students out there applying to the same schools and all of them believe they have the right to be accepted. How can X school accept all the excellent candidates? Even if the school wants to give everyone a chance, it is impossible for it to do it, so the admissions office has to evaluate each candidate beyond his “out of this world” stats and that is what not everybody understands. WUSTL looks for students with the highest abilities to succeed and it does a good job finding them.
