THe interview

hi there. I was just wondering if anybody who interviewed at hotchkiss before or any boarding school for that matter would share some insigt as to how its done and what goes on there. it would be great to hear some of your experiances. i just want to know a couple personal stories before my own in october. can't wait to hear your responces!

Are you applying to any other schools besides Hotchkiss?

BTW - I there's another thread like this.

Don't give generic responses please.

I think one of the main reasons I got accepted was because I wasn't a generic Valley girl or quiet Asian.

It's really important that you give your OWN opinion not pre-written or prepared responses that your parents had drilled into you. Yeah sure, my parents and I had practice interviews but only to get accustomed to being interviewed and they NEVER corrected or told me what to say.

if i were to practice the interview at home what questions would my parents or the adult ask me? thanks for the responces and i hope to see some of you on campus!! ;)

A couple of suggestions...

Why do you want to go to Hotchkiss?
Talk some about your ECs. Why do you do them? What do they mean?
What makes you a good candidate for admission?
What was the last book you read? (be prepared to discuss)

What do you do on weekends with your friends?
Was it your decision or your parents decision to apply to BS?
Favorite subject? Why? Least favorite? Why?

Look at the web site and view books before you go so you can refer to them to show your interest. Don't just say I love this school - say why, tell them how you will contribute to their community. But most of all relax, be yourself, and get the questions you have answered.

A question: Has anyone received questions in an interview they thought were slightly strange, i.e. personal, off topic etc? Just to be prepared if there is a chance that will be the case.

At St.Andrew's in Delaware my d was asked to write an essay before her interview. I understand a few of the schools do this.

Our son was asked what he thought his greatest strength and weakness were. When answering the "weakness" question, you might want to conclude it with what you steps you have been taking to overcome that weakness.

i was asked what i do with my friends and then what was the last movie i saw. we ended up talking for like 20 minutes about fever pitch

Hey, I thought I would get this thread to the top. I hope that we can all add info for current prep school applicants.
Types of questions asked.
How you may have prepared for the interview, both student and parent.
What you may have changed, if you only knew???????
Did any one school have a twist in their process that other school's did not do?

My d applied to 5 schools. One school gave her an Impromptu essay as part of her interview. There may be other schools that do this, but we didn't come across any in our int. process. OOps, the school was Middlesex.

^^It would be great if someone would answer this. I'll answer it next week after my interviews.

i go to hotchkiss and this is my 3rd year (senior year)..i got in as a sophomore
the wierdest question i ever had that they ask almost every candidate: If you were the head of school of hotchkiss, what would you change?? How bout if you were the head of school of your own school, what would you change then??

just to giv u guys some heads up

that is a weird question. I mean, what if you said, "I'd fire you!" Lol.

Here's one: Who's idea was it to apply to boarding school? on the same theme, did your parents make you come today or something like that. be sure you are able to answer questions about your application if you wrote on things that really interest you. What's your favorite book you have read ? and what did you like about it? At one interview, the guy that was interviewing us would not stop talking. It was like he was trying so hard to sell us on his school.

It would seem that if you had scheduled visits and stuff, then you are already "sold" on the school--at least to a point.

Any last minute tips on the interview or questions to ask? My first interview is tomorrow so any quick advice would be great!!

Where is your first interview?

Exeter (oh no). From there I go on to SPS, Andover, and Milton.

Am I supposed to have scheduled interviews by now? o_O
My dad is in another country, my mom doesn't have experience driving on highways, and we don't live that close by to begin with.
