The IOCT - Something to look foward to.

The IOCT - Check this out. I think this test is given twice a year. Correct me if I am wrong.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuQqWYCfmmk

Once a year, after Christmas. Mid January-Early February-ish. APFT is twice a year.

And it's ALL about technique. Practice, practice, practice!

Can you train for it prior to the test? I mean, can you go to the gym where its all set up and run through it whenever you want? Or would that make it too easy :P

Loved the video. Thanks for posting the link.

How many unversities would not only allow, but mandate, that the entire school population go through such an obstacle course and risk exposing its students to potential injury, failure and peer ridicule?

West Point - no other place quite like it!!

Fururewarrior: you will train for the IOCT during military movement (aka gymnastics class) in plebe year.

Sweet. Thanks.

And on a much more humorous note:

ENJOY!

:) The IOCT is still done in the old Hayes Gym (built in 1910 I believe), which adjoins the new Arvin Gym (amazing facility). http://www.usma.edu/publicaffairs/PV/050819/arvin.htm

Yes, the IOCT is still done in Hayes (pronouced haze) Gym. It's normally set up in November, permanently, and there's an instructor there in the evenings starting in December, running through January, to help you out.

The IOCT briefing reminds you that "other cadets are obstacles, too." Surprisingly, few people get hurt...but those that do, do get fairly seriously injured. The injury rate is less than 1% though, I asked at some point. They have an ambulance standing by downstairs, if necessary.

As for ridicule, it's somewhat of a tradition to go down and watch the football team, as they have people too big to go through the tire. It's a 10 second penalty, and they continue onward after waiting.

A good reason for candidates to work on those pullups. Good upper body strength decreases your chances of injury during the IOCT.
