Hi,

I am not too familiar with UNL and its programs (I'm from California), but I came upon this special program and it caught my attention. So far I have read that it offers a full scholarship for 4 years + stipends and has good exit opportunities. I am not afraid of being intellectually stimulates as I know it has an average ACT score of 32.5. I was just wondering what the exit opportunities and course load is like for this program when compared to a school like UC Berkeley. For UCB I would be paying around 35K each year in total. Location and weather are not that big of a deal for me because I have lived in both California and Canada so I'm kinda used to both. UCB was attractive because it was close by, but this program also seems to be very good.

I know it is hard to get into, especially if you are out of state, but I was just looking at my options as I am developing a college list.

My PSAT is 219 so I am probably not going to become a NMSF, but my other credentials are enough I think:
2180 SAT super scored (retaking in October, highest single is 2160)
800 Math 2
790 Bio E
760 USH
4.44 weighted GPA
3.97 unweighted
I'm not sure which other scholarships I would be eligible.

Thanks

Bump, also is this the same thing as The Raikes School of Management and Computer Science?

Sorry for the delay - haven’t been on CC since you posted. My son is in the Raikes program. If you look up “Raikes School” on wikipedia you can see the history of it (previously JD Edwards School of…). It does not have nearly the prestige of Berkeley. It is well-known regionally but not nationally - but more and more employers are hearing about Raikes and recruiting from there. For the first time this year, Google visited the Kauffman Center and did an interview workshop which included technical education/preparation. You also definitely have a “step up” with Microsoft as a Raikes student if you care about that sort of thing.

UNL/Raikes gives more weight to the ACT than the SAT so I highly recommend that you take it if you haven’t already.

My son LOVES this program. (He is a Computer Science major, BTW.) It is definitely challenging unless you walk in the door with CS background (yes even if you are a Business major you will learn programming).

Raikes is not a full-ride program. Raikes gives room & board tuition. If UNL wants you as a high-achieving out-of-state student (they like getting OOS students!) they will give you a Chancellor’s Scholarship that can pay most or all of your OOS tuition. My son has a full ride (NMSF, 34 ACT, and a couple of leadership credentials but not a lot).

I don’t think I’ll have the time to take the act. Is it that important? I have one more quick question, is the school diverse? Would an Asian or Indian feel a bit ostracized there? Thanks for your valuable information!

If your other stats are very good, then it’s probably not a big deal. But each year the Raikes school likes to mention the incoming class’s average ACT score (SAT is never mentioned) in their announcement about their incoming class. Here’s the one for 2013.

I was going to point you to the College Navigator website to look at statistics about the percentage of Caucasian and other students at UNL, but the site is down because of the government shutdown. Here’s the link anyway:

Lincoln, Nebraska is an oasis of progressivism in a conservative state and I think people of any ethnicity would feel welcome at UNL.

(If you have more questions and I’m responding too slowly, feel free to message me privately. I’m not on CC very much any more.)
