The Juilliard School: Music Composition (Part 2)

Okay so I have applied to Juilliard recently as a Composition major, and I am a little curious about the next steps. I know there will be an interview, but I am just now finding out that there will be an exam for composers. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on that and if there was anything I could do to prepare for it? I really would love to go to this school, so I am willing to do whatever I can to succeed properly!

Juilliard is, as you know, very selective, and some years there may even be only one open slot for an undergrad composer. Making it to the interview stage is an accomplishment in itself and very few do. You may be one of those few but just, first, want to give you an idea of the chances.

Any exams given are for placement purposes only. It helps to know theory and music history but if you haven’t studied these things as yet at an advanced level, you would simply be placed in the appropriate level class.

The interviews at Juilliard are a bit grueling but that is what you would expect in a rigorous program.

Why do you want to go there? What other schools are you applying to? Are you only applying to BM programs (composers can also go to BA programs at colleges and universities).

Sent you a priivate message.
