The Junior Statesmen summer school

Should I go or no?

I'm trying to find other plans in case I wont make it to TASP...

Would it be good to go or not matter at all?

JSA Summer School rules. I am an elected officer in the regular JSA program and I love it. Unfortunately, I've never hada chance to go to the summer school but I wish I have. Many of my friends have attended and every single one of them loved it and wishes they could back. It's an amazing experience.

I'm really looking forward to the JSA summer school. I think it's the fact that I will be surrounded by such wonderful and intelligent people that excites me, in addition to being at such a great location (hoping to attend the one at Princeton). I'm in JSA at my highschool and it's great! I'm hoping this summer program will get me prepared for my first year of debate. Yeah you should go, if you can raise the money since it's around $4,000 without a scholarship :(

i would've applied this summer if it wasn't for the money...

omg , if you can, goooooooooooo. i am STILL having nostalgia from my last summer whic hwas without a doubt the best time in my entire friggin life - and i've had quite a few good times for it compete with. and yeah, i have no money either but there are scholarships annnnnd you can do fundraising, i was able to get a partial scholarship for somewhere around 1, 500 and then raise the rest by goign throughout the community (esp organizations) and asking for help, eventually word got out that i needed the help and the school board connected me with the alumni association for our school which paid the whole rest of the tuition and then some for spending money. and i'm not the only one, a lot of ppl there that summer had some miraculous money breakthrough while trying to fundraise. give it a try. and it's like, never too late to apply with JSA Summer School.

for some reason, i just looked at the brochures and felt automatically uncomfortable. is it just me, or do the people seem very uppity, upper-middle-class, preppy, lives-handed-on-silver-platter-ish, etc? it doesn't seem very diverse at all.

I went to JSA summer school at Princeton last year.

"is it just me, or do the people seem very uppity, upper-middle-class, preppy, lives-handed-on-silver-platter-ish, etc? it doesn't seem very diverse at all."

Certainly, you will find lots of people there who are like that. but there are also so many who aren't (me, for example). I assure you that there are plenty of interesting and diverse people from all around the country and world.

but you gotta remember the marketing idea on that, those pics are not 100% representative of the program, fo course they choose the ones with the kids with collared shirts, suits and ties, khakis y aknow, b/c ultimatiely who's payign for this? the parents. so they're selling their program to parents, who want to see clean cut, preppy, blah blah kinda kids on covers b/c it somehow makes them feel better they associate it with being well mannered, behaved, groomed? (I've never understood the stereotype, one time i decided to wear skater pants just to see ya know, and sure enough adults and elderly ppl treated me soo much differently , i t was absurd.) but yes, please. ppl are not uppity or i wouldnt have gotten on there at all b/c i get very nervous around those kidn of ppl and totally clam up. wanna see some real pics form the program? like, not selected to the marketing team's agenda? like the pics they wouldv'e shown in the brochure if the idea was to sell the program to us truly instead? this is my friend's link, he took a bagillion pics there : http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/goaliewall22/album?.dir=/97a2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/goaliewall22

Navyblue, while about 50% of JSA'ers would probably fall in that category, it is not everyone, take this from a poor Russian immigrant who is an officer in the JSA program and whose good friend, another poor Russian immigrant, attended the summer school at Yale last year. Diversity has been one of our biggest goals this year and about 20-30% of attendance at our regional this past weekend was from inner city schools.

oh and one another comment, my friend who took these pics did happen to be like upper class preppy so that shows a bit in the pics and he took a vast majority of them at spcial occassions/events when we were obliged to dress up (like going to the UN., graduation, etc) so there are a disproportionate # with ppl in suits/ties, whatever compared to what actually was on a regular basis. there were maybe a handful of special events like that

actually, most JSA people wear suits and ties

At first I wore a Ukranian suit that my uncle gave to me back in Russia until I outgrew that, then I bought two Italian suits for $180, which I had saved up. Doesn't make me upper class preppy, I just love dressing in my suits.

nawww we didnt typically dress in suits/ties and such. not to class every day, pshaw, we wore everthign from jeans to shorts to khakis, whatever. dressing up was only for the trip into nyc/UN, spppecial debates in the law school (like 2), graduation ceremony, your one night of giving your one main speech in congressional workshop, um..i'm pretty sure that's all. i'll admit we did have one classmate who was eccentric/cool and would wear a suit to the dances but that didnt come across as uppity at all he was just one of those crazy awesome ppl that can pull off anything and it seems cool.

I have to qualify, all of my experiences come from the regular JSA program, not summer school, though I wish I had the chance to attend summer school as everyone I know loved it.

Anything I say specifically about summer school comes from working on it and from friends experiences.

how hard is it to get fin aid for jsa bc i won't go unless i get fin aid :(

This year, they have a lot more money to give out as financial aid than they've ever had before so you're in a much better position than students who came before you.

Hello!

I’m interested in going to JSA for International Relations this summer. Which location would be the best as far as speakers and places that you visit? (Georgetown, Princeton, or Stanford.)

I’m hoping that someone who has attended can say which would be better for me.

Also, if you know of any other good programs, let me know of them! I’m open to others, as well.

^I took International Relations at Georgetown this past summer. It was truly a blast. I learned a lot, though sometimes I think the academics were a little much for what the program really was, which is a fun 3 weeks on a beautiful campus + some time hanging around and getting to know D.C.

Def. pick Georgetown!
