The Kite Runner quote about kids

I'm in the middle of reading The Kite Runner and early in the book there's a quote about kids. The father is talking with a friend and expressing his disappointment in his son who is more interested in books than athletics and his friend says: "Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors." Just thought I'd pass this along as it struck me as so true.

fredo, I agree. In fact I posted that exact quote in the old forum some time back. It really hit home with both my kids going through the high school/college stress. Thanks for reminding us. p.s. Are you enjoying the book?

I'm halfway through and so far I am enjoying it. I've been warned that I'll be sobbing by the end and that it's a great book club discussion book. So I'm kind of waiting with baited breath for what happens in the second half of the book. Both husband and son are out of town this weekend (golfing in Florida!) so I'm using the time to read it. I didn't realize you had already posted the quote. Sorry for the double post!

Fredo - The Kite Runner is one of the best books I have ever read - beautifully written and one of those books that you are sad when it ends because you just want it to continue. It's also one of those books that has many different levels to it. Enjoy!

fredo I loved it too. Actually sniffled most of the way thru.

I'm in the middle of it too. And yes, the tears have already started.

Fredo, it was on the old forum a long time ago, so the new posters here needed to see it!

OT, but has anyone read Middlesex? I just started it for book club, and am finding it compelling.

I'm in the middle of The Kite Runner too. Yes, I've read Middlesex, as has my first year Smithie, and we were both totally blown away by it. Simply the most compelling thing I've read in ages.

I read that book for an english lit assignment and enjoyed every page. It left me choked up in the end.

I've read Middlesex and I loved it (another book club book). I found it absolutely fascinating. Men, women, the blurring of gender lines - even the title made me think.

I've finished Kite Runner - didn't actually cry as much as I thought I would. I really liked the book - I love very spare prose as I feel it lets the characters and story shine through. It's one of the few books we've read that I felt really came from a man's point of view. The whole father/son thing is such a intriguing phenomenon and so complicated. I know mother/daughter is an emotional tangle but at least the women get to express the emotions somewhat. In spite of our enlightened society, I still feel that males can't express those emotions even though they're roiling around inside - especially when it relates to their fathers or their sons. Fascinating.

Maybe we need a book club forum??

Our book club read Kite Runner, and I agree great book. I will now have to check out Middlesex.

If you liked The Kite Runner and Middlesex, you should read The Namesake.

I loved the Namesake and The Interpreter of Maladies. I will have to look for The Kite Runner.

I, too, loved The Kiterunner. For those of you who enjoyed that beautiful writing, I highly recommend The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy. Simply exquisite. :)

coolio quote! i'll be sure to check out that book. keep the titles coming! lol!

Loved Kite Runner & Middlesex.

I nominate The Time Traveler's Wife as a great read.

Add my name to the list of readers just blown away by "The Kite Runner."

I am reading "The Kite Runner" right now and am really enjoying it. "The Time Traveler's Wife" was wonderful. I was kind of creeped out by "Middlesex", the story of the family's history is certainly compelling, but cringe worthy. I just finished "I am Charlotte Simmonds". I couldn't put it down, but for a mom about to send her first born off to college, I must say that it freaked me out! I hope college campuses are not like the one depicted in that book.

I too enjoyed The Kite Runner. I found it disturbing yet I could not put it down. It has stayed with me. Can't wait to try Middlesex.

hey! inspired by all of you, i went and checked out The Kite Runner today.:) It seems really interesting.
