The last chance thread...will chance back!

Basics: White male
School: Very large public school in suburban NJ (2200 students)
Rank: School doesn't rank but I'm probably about the 85th-90th percentile
GPA: School goes on 0-100 scale, currently 95.1 W
Probable major: Poli Sci

SAT: March '09- 2040 (680 CR/740 M/620 W, 8 essay)
May '09- 2210 (750 CR/660 M/800 W, 9 essay)
Superscore is 2290 (750 CR/740 M/800 W, 9 essay)

SAT II: June '09; Lit: 730, Math I: 710..taking US History in September or October

EC: Roughly 110 hours at a local retirement home...2 years on school newspaper staff...3 years on undefeated conference champion Quiz Bowl team

Work: Umpire for local youth baseball league...counselor in training at overnight camp

AP: 5 on English Lang...school doesn't offer any APs to sophomores and very few to juniors

Senior schedule: AP English Lit, AP Psych, AP Macro, AP US Gov, Pre-Calc, Culinary Arts

Summers: Summer before junior year at overnight camp as counselor in training...summer before senior year at BU High School Honors Program taking 2 classes for credit

Other: NMS semi-finalist, likely to be finalist
Journalism Student of the Year for my school as a sophomore

-anticipating great recs from English and History teachers
-good rec from head of volunteers at the retirement home
-good counselor rec
-will have great essays

Legacies: Uncle graduated from Johns Hopkins Phi Beta Kappa...he is still involved with many alumni things.
Cousin graduated GW in 2001 and is also very involved (she conducts student interviews on the West Coast).

For the BU summer program I earned a B in Religion and Culture and a B+ in Intro to Poli Sci...with BU's notorious grade deflation I'd say this would look good for my application.

Overall, what are my chances for BU, GW, American, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and Northwestern?

I am considering applying to Hopkins ED, so please if you could give me my chances for ED and regular that would be great. And remember...I'll chance back! :)

bumppppppp

I thin Hopkins is your only real big reach, but applying ED will really help. Northwestern may also be a toughy.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/781022-chance-me-skidmore-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

BU, GW, American, and UMD all look like good chances for you. Hopkins might be tricky, but you have good test scores and ED will increase your chances. Northwestern is going to be a reach, but don’t let that deter you from applying.

Do colleges car about legacies?

yeah i think you have a greater than 50% chance for your two toughies and guaranteed acceptance to the others  congrats!

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/780607-chance-me-vanderbilt-emory-wake-forest.html#post1063254065</a></p>

You have a good chance at Hopkins ED, especially if you rank in the top 10%. Colleges will know where you rank. If your school is really competitive (average SAT over 2000), top 15% at a school that doesn’t rank is probably fine too.

Great chance at the others except NU where you have a fair chance if you’re one of the top applicants from your HS.

Uncles and cousins do not make you a legacy at most schools.

I’m not sure what the average SAT s at my school, but it’s public so I doubt the average SAT is over 2000. And we don’t rank but I do know for a fact I’m right about the 85th percentile.

Northwestern hasn’t accepted any kids from my school over the past few years except for a recruited athlete, so I don’t know if this hurts my chances.

But overall, thank you for the feedback!

bumppppppp

shameless bumping

Wow, I think you have a really good chance to get in Johns Hopkins and im not just saying that to be nice. I mean of course a place like Johns Hopkins is like basically on par with an Ivy League college, so there are no guarantees even if someone has credentials as impressive as yours. I agree that all the other colleges will be basicaly safe for you, and Northwestern maybe difficult but I believe you will get in. Although your credentials already seem impressive enough, applying early decision will definitely help and so will your alumni connection (esp. if your grandpa is rich and gives money, that never hurts). I think you are competitive enough to be in the top of the running for all of them. Just make sure your essay is as strong as the rest of your credentials. Being exceptionally strong in writing could boost your chances since its a lot of technology and math/science people who apply here. I think if Johns Hopkins is your first choice, you should definitely apply early decision, to raise your chances even more! Tell me what happens when you find out!

Hey, i know its annoying but can you chance me too please? My credentials aren’t quite as impressive or accomplished as yours, and I know these schools will be reaches but still tell me what you think please.

-still have to take subject tests and still have to take ACT

I am wondering about my chances of getting into University of Chicago and Amherst. I know they are reaches. I may apply early action to University of Chicago. No legacies but my brother went to the University of Chicago and did very well and was on the deans list 5 years ago.
Thanks guys! :)

I’d say your chances are pretty good for American and GW, solid matches if not better. I don’t know as much for the other schools, but I’d say you’ve got chances at all of them, especially with ED. Good luck.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/780097-chance-me-dc-ir-schools-neat-organized.html</a></p>

@LucyVail: For UChicago- The Writing score is awesome, but Math and CR will definitely have to come up to put you in the running. As of now your CR would put you in the 25% percentile, and your Math would probably be in the bottom 10%. Not to be mean, but those are the numbers.

However, the fact that you’ve already settled on a major (and they’re probably not the most common majors and minors) may help you.

No, I know you’re not being mean, I’m glad you were honest! I know, I really need to bring those up but I don’t know how. How did you bring up your SAT scores? Like how did you study? I especially need help with the math. Your math score got really high! Help! Any tips? haha and by the way, thanks so much for giving me your advice! So you think that that is the biggest and most important thing to help me get in? Also, did you have to study a lot to make your second SAT score go up? Or did you just naturally improve the second time? do you know anything about early action? Are there any colleges that defer all applicants who aren’t accepted in the early round to the regular decision pool for reconsideration? Thank you so much! sorry about so many questions
