The last UC chances thread I'll ever make!

If someone can help me calculate my GPA score correctly, that'd be awesome. I've gotten so many mixed UC GPA scores ranging from a 2.9 to a 3.8

I plan to apply for these UCs: Riverside, Santa Barbera, Davis, Irvine, San Diego, UCLA, and Berkeley.

Some other schools I am just going to apply for include University of the Pacific, USC, and I already applied for CSU Cal Poly San Luis.

My test scores are low, and I'll be taking SAT1s again this weekend. Hoping for at least a 1750-1850.

I'm also hoping my upward trend can maybe help me out a little.

My essays are pretty good. Not magnificent, but pretty solid I'd say.

Honestly, if I can make at least UCSB or UCD.. I'll be more than happy.

Currently, here are my grades. I am a current Senior and I live in North California.

I will be as honest as I can so you guys can give me your honest opinions as well. Hopefully you can give me constructive criticism!
All classes that are weighted I'll put a W by it.

Class Rank: 81

I can speak Mandarin fluently.

Well.. I think that's all I got! Hopefully you guys can give some opinions on how I can improve my chances at ALL UC schools.

Thanks for your time!

If you are a Cali resident, chances are okay for SB and UCD.
GPA is good. SAT get that up~!

dont know for sure but ur Gpa looks calculated wrong
and u got a D so that makes u ineligible unless u retook it

^Which I did. I was able to get a B the year after and it is replaced.

I also took Alg1 and Geometry in Middle School and I heard they count that with A-G req. also. Not sure though.

Hmmmm ok

But ur Gpa still doesn't look right. Make sure yr not giving extra points to all honors classes. Only some of them get it

^I have down whatever my transcript says. That's not my UC GPA.

bump bump bump

ttt ttt ttt ttt

tttt tttt tttt tttt

you'll be fine for Davis and Santa Barbara.

Your grades were as follows: (I'm only listing sophomore and junior years, since that's all that counts in figuring your UC GPA).

Sophomore Year:

Basketball (PE) A (doesn't count--non-academic)
Spanish 3 B-
PreCalculus D- I'll explain this one at the end (see below)
W H English 2 B
W H Biology B
Student Government A (doesn't count--not a real academic a-g class)

so counts as 3 academic classes (excluding precalculus) and 9 total grade points (A=4, B=3, C=2)

SEM 2
Weight Training (PE) A (doesn't count--not an academic class)
Spanish 3 B
Algebra 2 B+
W H English 2 B
W H Biology B-
Student Government A (doesn't count--not a real academic a-g class)

so counts as 4 academic classes and 12 grade points

Junior Year:

SEM 1
Precalculus: B-
Chemistry: B-
Student Government: A (doesn't count--not a real academic a-g class)
Spanish 4: A-
W AP History: A-
W H English 3: A

so counts as 5 academic classes and 18 grade points

SEM 2
Precalculus: B
Chemistry: A
Student Government: A (doesn't count--not a real academic a-g class)
Spanish 4: A
W AP History: A-
W H English 3: A-

so counts as 5 academic classes and 19 grade points

Total so far: 17 academic classes and 58 grade points

Now let's see how the UCs treat courses where you get a D and then retake it. From their website, they say:

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html

"D and F Grades: If you have earned a D or F in an "a-g" course, you must repeat the course with a grade of C or better in order to apply it toward your Subject Requirement. The original D or F grade will not be included in the GPA calculation, and the new grade will be used. If you repeat a course in which you initially earned a grade of C, the second grade will not be used."

So, this means they will just treat the first class as though you never took it.

Now, let's look at what it says about computing the UC GPA and honors courses:

Honors Courses: The University assigns extra points for up to eight semesters of University-certified honors-level and Advanced Placement courses taken in the last three years of high school: A=5 points, B=4 points, C=3 points. No more than two yearlong UC-approved honors level courses taken in the 10th grade may be given extra points. A grade of D in an honors or advanced placement course does not earn extra points.

The courses must be in the following "a-g" subjects: history/social science, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science, language other than English, and visual and performing arts. Also, they must be certified as honors courses by the University. In these subjects, as well as in computer science, acceptable honors-level courses include Advanced Placement courses, Higher Level and designated Standard Level International Baccalaureate courses, and college courses that are transferable to the University.

So, this means we can add 8 extra grade points to your score:

New total: 17 academic classes and 64 grade points

UC GPA = 64/17 = 3.764

Your SATs are 1700 and the SAT IIs add to 1070.

You are an in-state student.

Your ECs in student government really helps with leadership, but the SATs and the GPA are both slightly below the UCD/UCSB/UCI averages. (3.9 or so).

This makes you borderline for UCD, UCSB, and UCI. In my view, you will need to get about the 1850 SAT I score you are forecasting in order to get into these schools. (1800 might do it)

As it currently stands (if you don't increase your scores), I'm projecting you will get into UCSC and UCR, but not into UCD or UCSB.

Good luck this coming weekend and with your UC applications.

Thank you for your honesty and help Calcruzer, that really helped a lot.

When i calculated his GPA I came out to 3.647??

^Don't even worry about it.. people have tried to calculate my UC GPA many times and I don't think I've ever gotten the same answer twice. One person told me I had a 2.9 UC GPA before.

You're welcome.

Good luck on Saturday with the SATs.

And actually, I did compute it wrongly, 58+8=66 (tough evening, but no excuses), so it should be

UC GPA = 66/17 = 3.88

meaning that he should be able to get into UCSB and UCD with about a 1725-1750 on the SAT Is.

Final bump for any other opinions!

I got 62/17

meh whatever, you're fine lol

^I was actually able to get 66/17
