The Lawrenceville School

Anyone who visited have an opinion about this school? I got accepted but didn't visit. How does it compare with Choate?
Thank You

Choate is...say..more famous...but that doesnt really matter....they are equal academically. I personally liked lawrenceville other than the campus which i find it to be too spreadout.... It's in new jersey so you dont get to play against say, the peer schools, but rather mercenburg, peddie and schools around the area for sports....

I was accepted and most likely attending...it's a great school. Compared to Choate? Both are good. But Lawrenceville is extremely relaxed...like you can wear jeans, sweats, hoodies and stuff to classes. Also, I disagree with bearcats...I think Choate is more spread out. Lawrenceville also has good food(I went there for tennis one year haha) and it was pretty good. But like bearcats said, I think Choate might be more well known, but Lawrenceville is a great school too...you should revisit!

Jeans? Hoodies? Great Food?
Darn I should have applied to Lawrenceville!

if i were you i would consider both. personally i would choose lawrenceville because it is close to home and it is a very relaxed with everything. i agree with clz the food is amazing and tour can wear tshirts jeans hoodies etc. to class. and everything you need is right on campus and you can leave the campus to go shopping to the movies or wherever whenever you want you just have to check in with your house master first. its great because it is so pretty! also :)oh an btw did u ever end up going and what was your ssat score? im just wondering cause idk if mine was good or not… thanks :)

Welcome to CC, fieldhockeylax13!

This Lawrenceville thread is a few years old, so the student who posted has certainly already long since made a decision . . . but student insights about a school are always welcome! (Especially when they’re about a school that doesn’t close for new applications for another week!)

Hello
My son is looking to apply to Lawrenceville next year. He is currently in 7th grade and we will soon be starting the application process. We live in NJ and the reason for considering Lawrenceville is that we have heard it offers great academics and attracts a lot of great talent, enabling the kids to be among the future best minds of the country.
Since we do not know anyone who attended Lawrenceville, can someone give us information regarding the application process and the expectation? Our son is very bright and very strong in academics. ( He is taking pre calc honors in 7th grade in upper school and always scores A or A+). His grades have been consistently A or A+ in all subjects. He plays violin fairly well and has been taking lessons for over 7 years. But he is not at all into sports. He plays tennis once a week and takes part in cross country and swim team in school but that’s about it. His interests are very academic.
I’m interested in knowing how much emphasis is given to sports in Lawrenceville or Peddy and if this is lack of sports is considered a drawback in the application

Your son should find that sports are a big deal at both L’ville and Peddie, but not all students are expected to be Varsity athletes. He will have to participate at the lower levels (Thirds/freshmen team) at both schools, which would appear to follow quite naturally from what he is currently doing at school. L’ville celebrates its sports culture perhaps a bit more than Peddie does, but both have terrific programs outside of athletics, including orchestra. Both schools will appreciate his academic prowess, but since they get lots of kids who have high test scores and grades, they will look for other interests and ability to live in a boarding community. Other threads have all the info you need for application process, and I would especially urge you to read the one by SevenDad about his family’s experience, with comments by other families as well.

Here’s a link to that thread, which is now a few pages down in the Parents section.

Thanks so much for taking time to provide so much information.
It is very helpful.
We really appreciate it.

HI
Any info on what Lawrenceville/Andover may find as acceptable SSAT Score?
We are looking at a score of 96 Percentile now - but that average is from excellent math & verbal but not so good reading comprehension…
Not sure how that will be viewed. Also, any suggestions on retaking SSAT since the reading score is quite low?

Thanks for the information.

Don’t bother retaking, as the 96 is perfectly fine for the score component at both schools. Now, it’s all the other stuff in the application that matters. (And am assuming that good grades indicate the reading comp is not all that low, or is an aberration.)

We had a 96 applicant to L’ville, and it certainly wasn’t the score that put him on the WL. It was geographic diversity, as likely as not, or another factor which will never be known. Remember that WL says, “you’re certainly qualified enough, it’s just that all these other applicants are too, and certain considerations came into play that were pretty much out of your hands”. Meaning, the SSAT, at that number, would be a misplaced focus, though nobody will prevent you from retaking if you so desire. Both schools reject plenty of 99%ers.

I am a Lawrentian and I wouldn’t bother retaking. 96% is gorgeous.

One more thing, as I scan through this again and see your earlier post. My son applied to L’ville as an in-state boarder, as we live near the Delaware Memorial Bridge, across from Wilmington, DE. A strong student, he was not “advanced” in any subject as is your son. He did have years of an instrument under his belt, and was athletically accomplished. As I wrote before, this got him a WL letter. Be aware that there are two different applicant pools, the day students, drawing from both NJ and PA, and the boarders. You say that you live in NJ. If you are applying as a boarder, the SSAT is not the real issue so much as it is that you want a strong “hook”. Admissions needs a good reason to choose your son over applicants from other states and nations which meet their goals for “geographic diversity”. L’ville has NJ boarders (how many?), but, naturally, most of the NJ students are admitted to the day population. Some of the NJ boarders that I know of are strong athletes, which is one of the hooks L’ville values. Your son’s interests in math and violin are good – who knows if it’s what will work for L’ville. You might ask your AO directly about stats for NJ applicants (and whether full pay or financial aid makes a difference). From the geographic standpoint, Andover may be the likelier admit. You had mentioned Peddie before, and it does take more NJ boarders than L’ville, I think. It has a strong math/science curriculum as well.

Thanks Charger78 for the details.
My son is applying as day student as we are willing to relocate if he gets in. Lawrenceville’s advance curriculum & university affiliations seem great! We will hope for the best .

Thanks for all the advice & support
