I was wondering - - how often do Wash U students go to The Loop to hang out on weekend nights? I’ve heard a lot about it but not sure how often Wash U students actually go there. Also, is it within walking distance from main campus (how many minutes walk is it) or is there a bus there from main campus, do kids uber, etc…? I’m trying to figure out if freshmen and sophomores spend most of their nights hanging out on campus, in The Loop, in St. Louis, etc… If my daughter isn’t a partier and doesn’t see herself in a sorority, will she be bored socially at Wash U? Any information that you can share would be helpful!!
WashU students definitely go to the Loop pretty often and it’s around a 20 minute walk from the dorms, or a 10 minute walk from Olin library via the overpass. The campus circulator also stops at the overpass. It’s a very popular spot for Friday dinners or Sat/Sun lunch. That said students split their time between being on and off campus on the weekends with most people staying on campus on Sunday. WashU definitely has many other ways to be social other than greek life or parties. Ursa’s does “nightlife” programming every Friday and most Thursday nights with things such as movies, game tournaments, nacho bars, local catering, and crafting things like making fleece blankets and stuff. Ursas events usually have some great free stuff and always have free snacks and food, so even people who do party will stop by Ursas for a bit before going to frats or anything. Also extra curricular clubs are a great way to socialize without having to be a partier.
Thanks so much for your reply. What is the campus circulator? And, assuming it’s some type of transportation, does it go between the overpass and the loop? Also, where is the overpass? I don’t remember seeing it during our visit to Wash U. I had also heard that Ursas used to serve food, but doesn’t anymore. Do they still have the free snacks and food, nacho bar, etc… you refer to (maybe they offer it once in a while, but not all the time?)? I’m not sure how recent your info is or if I am mistaken and they do in fact serve food. Thanks!!
They don’t serve food like a dining hall, but they almost always have food and snacks at their events. I’m a tour guide and just finished my freshman year at WashU so that’s where I get my info The circulator (we call it the circ) is a bus system that goes around campus, stopping in two places on the 40, the DUC, the Art School, the front of campus near the Skinker metro stop, Rudolph hall, the overpass, the Village (upperclassmen housing), and then circles back around. The WUSTL app has a dynamic map tracking the busses so you can see exactly where they are in their route. Also they leave from the clocktower on the 40 around every 20 minutes. Although the circ goes to the overpass, it doesn’t go to the Loop because it’s a street off campus (look up Delmar Loop on Google maps). This is also why it’s not really shown on tours. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have!
If I remember correctly, the overpass to the Loop goes over Forest Park Parkway near the parking lot that is close to the Village and Throop Drive.
