Hey, I will be going to Tech next year and have absolutely no clue what housing to pick, so any current students with suggestions, please help. The people I have talked to have suggested Glenn FE, but others have said that hall along with towers is depressing and cramped. I've heard the rooms and showers on East campus are pratty crappy compared to West campus, but for some reason people seem to still suggest East campus. What is the truth about the dorms?... maybe some of the pros/cons of west versus east, and any other suggests regarding housing. Thanks for the help.

I'm part of the class of '11 so obviously I don't have firsthand experience in the dorms, but the main reason I've read for being on East Campus is that "its closer to everything." I noticed from the housing site though that, at least for FE dorms, east campus ones are generally smaller and single-sex while west campus has larger and co-ed dorms.

yeah i live on east and love it. the rooms are smaller and older which are the downfalls but its closer to the city, campus, greek houses, food etc. west has much larger newer dorms in a more suburban atmosphere so its up to you.

I'm class of 2011, as well.

It's kind of weird.

East rooms are smaller. The location is right next to the highway (read: louder and less safe). The food is worse.

West rooms are larger. The location is more inside the campus, which makes it quieter and safer. The food is better.

The major reasons my friends give for choosing East are

It's where the parties are at

It's closer to the football stadium

More freshman are there

These three reasons override the size, sound, and safety disadvantages associated with East.

It boils down to preference. I plan to study a lot, weight train, and run, so West is better for me. (The CRC is closer to West.)

east campus is very safe don't think that it is not. the sound is not bad at all. most of the dorms are not on the highway and even if they are. you can't hear it unless the windows are open. i mean if you plan on being at the CRC everyday then sure, but i always just walk there or take the stinger.

dani,

I'll take your word for it.

I base my opinion on the advice of a few seniors. When I asked them "East or West?", both emphasized the location of East being more conducive to the occasional beggar walking astray on campus.

I plan to be at the CRC three times a week; the proximity is just convenient.

It really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. As others have already mentioned, West is quieter, food is better, CRC is there, while East is louder and more lively but food is worse.

As a current freshmen, I would choose West over East any day.

Does everyone who wants housing get it?

No. Students must apply before May 1 to be guaranteed on-campus housing somewhere.

Thanks, at least the seniors aren't being told they can't have housing like I read on the UMD forum.

No problem.

If I recall correctly, last year there were some problems regarding on-campus housing, namely the occasional three students per room.

Nevertheless, as they say, if you apply late, you get "stuck in West." ;)
