The market value of an economics undergrad degree

I'm curious about what sort of job opportunities open to someone who has an economics undergrad degree from say, stanford. Is it even possible to get a good paying job with it? If so, what kind?

Is an undergraduate business degree worth more in the sense that it would open more doors?

From a school like Stanford? Yeah, you can definitely get a good job. Econ isn't really business. It's a Social Sciences.

A guy at Kenan flagler told me that economics majors have access to all of the career fairs/services that business majors do, and when there is a job posting for business majors only, economics majors can apply for an interview as well.

Thats interesting. I may end up going to business school later, but I would really like to work 2-3 years in between to have some actual work experience and cash.

If it didn't give a good job, I would do my undergraduate in creative writing and journalism and then immediately move on to business school.

Okay I miss understood what you were saying. Top schools like Stanford probably have better recruiting regardless of the major than some top Business Schools (beyond Wharton and possibly Sloan and Stern). So I'd say no you wouldn't be at a disadvantage.

But what kind of jobs can one expect with an economics degree? I'd love to work in strategy consulting. Is that a possibility?

I don't see why not. This is if you're going to Stanford. Look at the career reports...
