The Meaning of Life

be nice to bacteria, they outnumber us a trillion to one!

Since when are you the universal truth-monger of the world? That’s just your opinion, and a very radical and outlandish one at that. What your saying is just as arguable as any religion.

Well then Infinite_Truth, why are we here and other questions just stem from the human conscience that seeks to find an answer to all hows and whys. We have not found a reason for being here except for the biological purposes such as reproducing etc.

Why do we need to put meaning such as living for God etc. on something we don’t have the answer for. It is like saying that God created everything just because we do not have the answer to that question.

Why do you believe in God? Is it because you subscribe to the same religion that your parents did? Is it because you are scared of death and the hell that the Christian religion scares you with? It will probably be these reasons – though there are better ones – which do nothing to support the existence of God?

God does not give meaning to one’s life unless they make it that way. A priest lives his life for God and receives meaning from God. A businessman may make meaning out of life just by competing to make more money. How would that not be the meaning of his life if that is the one thing he aspires and works for?

I’ve had this discussion with friends…and since we can’t figure out why the universe exists in the first place (or how for that matter, matter–and no don’t say big bang cause ydk where all that matter came from)…it’s difficult to determine our position in it. If only I could figure out the purpose of the existance of matter in general.

lookingforwhat?: the matter from the big bang may have come from a white hole

“lookingforwhat?: the matter from the big bang may have come from a white hole”

Yeah, but I meant originally. Like…why did matter ever need to come into existance?

"Why do we need to put meaning such as living for God etc. on something we don’t have the answer for. It is like saying that God created everything just because we do not have the answer to that question.

If you believe in God, that doesn’t mean that he is the meaning of your life. And people put meaning to their lives because they put meaning to everything else-why should their lives be left out? It’s a good question, “Why are we here?” Some people say that there is no answer, and others say there is. It’s all a matter of opinion, really, because we won’t know until we’re dead.

By the way, as some one who believes in God, I’m not really scared of death either way (i.e. with or without an after life).

“By the way, as some one who believes in God, I’m not really scared of death either way (i.e. with or without an after life).”

Yes you are – everyone is. If someone walked up to you with a gun pointing at you, you’ll be scared. You’re not gonna be indifferent. It doesn’t matter what one’s beliefs are, everyone is scared of death.

“Yes you are – everyone is. If someone walked up to you with a gun pointing at you, you’ll be scared. You’re not gonna be indifferent. It doesn’t matter what one’s beliefs are, everyone is scared of death.”

No…if you don’t have an amygdalam (is that the right part?) then you aren’t scared of anything. And yes…you can live without it.

Plus, how do you explain suicide? =/

“Plus, how do you explain suicide? =/”

You can still be afraid when you commit suicide; you just have to think death is more pleasent then life.

“If someone walked up to you with a gun pointing at you, you’ll be scared.”

I’d be scared of the pain associated with being shot, but if I died, there wouldn’t be any pain, so death isn’t the scary part in this situation-the pain, and possibility that a wound could leave you alive but debilitated, is the scary part.

“It doesn’t matter what one’s beliefs are, everyone is scared of death.”

I don’t think everyone is scared of death. There are worse things to be scared of, like the things you can’t escape. Death is, itself, an escape from everything on earth.

I love how people are arguing over the meaning of life when surely, there is no definitive answer and no clear way to support merely opinions.
