The Meaning of Life

I am aware of the dynamic surrounding this pursuit, and I know the solution.

Is anyone genuinely curious as to the "Meaning of Life" and would like to discuss it? Or, are most people here convinced that there is no reason, or that it is some simple thing like "reproduction" or whatever.

Watch the show Entourage.

It’s 42.

Duh.

There is no meaning of life.

People who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point.

Well, there is no objective purpose in one’s life; we beings place our own meanings/values in our lives, thus giving us a sort of illusion to the ultimate superficiality of life.

there may or may not be, but if there is i dont think we can really know. i believe in God, and i think through him there is some meaning to life we cant know rly at this point. to me its more important, and possible, to find meaning in my own life. this may be through doing something i believe in, doing some good for mankind, or whatever. i think for me to be happy i have to feel that my life has some importance and does something in the world

The meaning of life, you ask? Silly rabbit–it’s a bowl of oatmeal with a side of antiderivatives.

/thread

we don’t know that for sure. In the book, it said. “What do you get if you multiply six by nine.” Who knows, it could be 54.

No.

No we’re on to something here…

Well first of all, I’m going to be serius and go all typical biological standpoint here, with a few inherent but understandable flaws. There is neither a meaning of life nor no meaning of life. The whole concept shouldn’t even exist. Because of the human condition/affliction, our advanced intelligence, we came up with a “meaning for life,” and thought about it under a cherry tree. But now that we’re pretty damn sure that life spontaneously formed, we should discard our wasteful thinking about the whole “meaning of life” thing and get on with trying to sponsor orphaned kids in Africa and flash mobbing to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Now then… the actual meaning of life? I believe that life was formed so that humans could eventually arise and destroy the Earth because of the self-destructive nature of the universe.
… but sex works too

Pretty much what Dnation said. You could argue that there is no set meaning to life because it can be so many different things to so many different people. But, that doesn’t mean it’s meaningless.

Every person brings their own meanings into their lives, whether its religion, family, life outlooks, values, etc. People without meaning usually end up cynical with a pessimistic outlook on life. They are sad and depressed, even if they do not admit it.

The “meaning of life” as in the omnipotent thing that explains our existence as human beings really is of very little consequence to me. I don’t care to explore the “meaning of life” in an existential way…just because I feel like we will never find out what it truly is until we pass (if we ever find out at all).

On the other hand, I know the meaning of MY life…or I feel certain that if I don’t know the meaning of my life, I can and will find it. That is the only reassurance I need, and greatly explains why I don’t adhere to any specific religion. I believe religion (the institution) was largely established to help explain the “meaning of life” to its followers. Since I don’t have that need to explain the “meaning of life” (unlike most of the world who do follow a religion, supposedly) religion is just not a source of information/support that I would ever turn to.

I’ll get it started then with a question:

If you imagined yourself at the single happiest moments you have ever been, like totally euphoric or happy, like a great orgasm or something or a similar moment of joy, did you ever contemplate the meaning of life?

Why does everything have to have meaning? It is what it is, as is the case with pretty much everything. Get over yourselves people, we ain’t that important.

I can understand why you’d want to understand how it all works, because that’s just plain interesting. But meaning? Nah, no way. We’re way too small for that. Look at how huge the universe is, and I’m now only talking about the part we can see and know (very little) about.

Looking for explanation in religion is the last place where you should be looking if you want some answers. Religion never really helped anyone finding anything rational. “We can’t explain it, so it must have come from god”. I feel like we should have evolved past the whole idea of religion a long time ago. Give it another few hundred years and that silly medieval voodoo shtick will be out of our systems.

Just enjoy the ride, that’s the only thing you really can do. Grab another drink and tap another ass, because it’s a short ride, too. Don’t take it too seriously and laugh about the people who do, because they just don’t get it.

Again, get over yourself. Humans are so self-important.

The earth has been through a lot worse than us. If we manage to destroy the ecosystem (which won’t happen), the human race will die out, and within a couple of hundred years or maybe thousand, the earth will be restored again. This planet did that many times before we even were around. I’m pretty damn positive the earth will out-live the human species.

Yes sir it does.

bluesfella is right though (his first post, not his second bs)
we just fail to grasp that there doesn’t necessarily have to be a “meaning” for everything. the chain of explanation can only be sustained for so long.
Also, nuclear war.

The meaning of life is to win the game, and no I’m not talking about that other game that you just lost, I’m talking about everyone’s personal game that they make the rules for. Nobody else can tell you what’s right or what’s wrong or what can make you happy. If winning your game means devoting your life to helping other people and that makes you happy then you win, or if it means murdering your biggest enemy (NOT that I condone murder, it’s not allowed in my game) and getting the death penalty but you are happy and without regret when you die, then I guess you win too. You have to do what you want to do.

i have to agree with Johnson, the only logical answer is 42

Actually 42 is the ultimate answer to the ultimate question.

I certainly do not believe “What is the meaning of life” is the ultimate question.
