The Midyear Report...

How exactly does this work? I was able to conclude from the information within the application that all potential applicants, EA and RD alike, must submit their 1st semester transcripts. Does anyone know for a fact whether this is completely true? Also, what is the worst possible result of this? Let's say that my GPA actually falls a couple hundredths of a point following a mixture of A's and B's on my semester report card, while previously receiving only 2 B's. Can I possibly be deferred, or God forbid, rejected, despite already having received my EA acceptance letter? Should I start panicking with these factors in mind?

lol no you should not be panicking withi your ea already in hand. That's not too large of a drop off and they wont even ask about it.

FYI- You don't submit an official transcript. We had to submit our updated grades and rank via the online application. I doubt they'll reject you for getting a few B's.

From Ted O'Neill's 2009 Convocation address:

(In response to the question, "Where have you been?", given Chicago's late start date.)

We hope, just because you imagined that when you arrived you would catch a whiff of the corpse of fun, that you didn’t delay your departure. Maybe you thought you got the wrong letter! Or, that we changed our decision – we found out that you didn’t study for your calculus placement exam, or read The Iliad, or memorize French idioms, or, that we really paid attention to your spring semester C- in AP Chemistry – that instead you went to the beach, de-tassled corn, or drank a root beer – things no University of Chicago student is supposed to do. But – we don’t make mistakes, and, stare decisus –the decision stands (for the next day or so, the Latin phase newscasters will take the most pleasure in saying), stare decisus, unless you really think those old judges didn’t know what they were doing – stare decisus – “you’re stuck” is the English translation.

However .... the best reason for doing well your senior year is that you will be better prepared for Chicago next year!

I'm not necessarily doing "badly" this semester in regards to my grades. In fact, I do have A's in basically all of my classes at this point. Yet, I would simply like to know what the worst-case scenario would be if I received a couple of B's following potentially disastrous midterm exams, which would consequently result in a GPA decrease of 2 or 3 hundredths of a point. I have no intention of applying to any other schools, thus I would be basically screwed if the admissions department perceived my performance as negligent and possibly nullified my acceptance. Nevertheless, 75% of my schedule is comprised of AP classes, thus it is expected that a B or two will slip in somewhere.

I really hope Mr. O'Neill was being serious about that "you're stuck" statement. :-)

mCsHaDyPL,
IMO, you are just fine with a couple of B's and the rest A's. The people at Chicago are honorable. A situation where all of your grades went down - or you obtained multiple C's or worse - would be another story. Just don't do that to yourself.

The only reason you might want to submit another application is if there is any possibly you would need a financial safety.

ive been deferred and i have a C or worse in calc... i'm guessing this means theres no hope.

i think O'Niell can be taken at his word; i was wondering the same thing mc, but i dont think a C or two will rescind the acceptance. chill out, man

I just tend to get into "panic mode" when uncertain situations arise. I'm guessing I should be fine considering that I have gotten B's before. A couple more will probably still be acceptable. Alright, well thanks for all the input..definitely calmed my nerves

I got deferred, and i've only received 2 B+'s all high school (in french 3 and 4 both honors). Other than that in all my AP/Honors classes i've only received final grades in the A- to A+ range. This semester, i'm taking just about all AP classes, and as a result i have 1 A, 1 B+, and 1 B (probably a B+, teacher forgot to grade something haha). I really wonder how UChicago would this change of grades. Yikes, gotta keep working hard, this year is going to be INSANEEEEE!!!

Quick question. I was recently accepted to the U of C. Do I need to submit a mid-year report or just send an official transcript when I matriculate?

thanks!

I believe there is a special mid-year form that one sends online or paper that is included in the application materials.

I'm having a lot of trouble in my AP Calc BC class. I'm working really hard and I think i will be able to pull off a B but just in case, we have decided that 1 C wont get me kicked out right? Previously, I have had straight A's (for the final grade at least). And would a few B's and a C for sure screw me over?

My dad's bothering me for 3 B's so far -- AP English, AP Calc, and Honors 3rd year French. I hope that won't kill me? I think I'll be able to pull Calc up to an A. English is a big "if" because only one person is getting an A, and she's just really good at everything. French is just not going to happen. I suck at French. Watching me attempt to speak French is like watching several trains crash.

I thought that after I got accepted, I could forget about my grades and just focus on learning. That's what I've been doing before, but grades have always been at the back of my mind. Can I assume that I can just let them go, meaning will they mind a few B's?

What's the Ivy policy on this?

No, a couple of B's or an unaccustomed C won't get your acceptance rescinded.

thanks idad that really relieves a lot of pressure. I'm still gonna try to raise my grades because i'm unhappy with them but at least i know i'm not screwed if i can't.

idad, do you know how midyear grades work for deferred students?

As long as one intends to continue their application I believe one must send them in. If you are asking if declining grades matter for deferred, I don't think they would help.
