Reading the past posts awcntdb is a huge supporter of gun rights. Maybe we should arm all the black students and see if that helps solve the problem
Okay, regarding the rumors last night: Yeah, most of those were made up. The only confirmed thing was the one Yik Yak threat that the Missouri S&T student was arrested for this morning. According to friends who were out and about campus last night, it was all pretty quiet. But you all know how college students are; when there is fear, some enjoy perpetuating it by starting more rumors or in the heat of the moment mistake something for something else. I do know that many sororities and frats were on lockdown last night because of some alleged threats.
Payton Head did make a Facebook post (the one referenced earlier) about him working with law enforcement about the KKK and then retracted the statement. He has not explained why he originally posted the first Facebook post and some students are calling for his resignation (though it should be noted we have elections next week anyhow and will have a new president and vice president soon so it doesn’t really matter at this point regardless). I personally doubt Payton would’ve posted that to purposely mislead students; he’s a smart guy and would realize that would hurt his reputation and cause if he did that on purpose. Again, in the heat of the moment, things happen. It certainly was not good that he posted that, but people were genuinely afraid for their lives last night and I think he was just trying to let people know more than MU’s official alert system was. But I truly don’t believe he was intentionally making things up.
Now regarding the previous racial incidents: No, there is no hard evidence for any of them. Yes, currently we’re at the “skeptical” stage where many are questioning what really happened. However, just like no evidence means it might not have happened, no evidence also doesn’t prove it didn’t happen. I really doubt they’d release a picture of the “poop swastika” to the public. In addition, since it supposedly happened at 2 a.m., it’s not likely very many people saw it. For all we know, an RA could’ve been the first to see it and it was quickly dealt with so it’s not like students would’ve had a chance to take a picture themselves.
Could Payton have lied about being called the n-word? Sure, but I really don’t think he would lie about that and I believe if I remember correctly that there were bystanders who confirmed it. There have been a couple other incidents where (usually drunk) students have called other students the n-word. These are all believable and while there is no “proof” I don’t doubt they happened. There was also an incident with the Legions of Black Collegians right before Homecoming in which they were practicing their Homecoming skit and were called the n-word; that’s definitely true; the guy was later caught.
ce527m,
“But I truly don’t believe he was intentionally making things up.”
so you are saying he was confused about working with the national guard/state and M.U. police about the KKK being on campus…that is a super sized “mistake” to make! that is a really big leap of faith to think that was not intentionally made up. he did not even say he heard the national guard and the KKK were on campus he said he was working with the national guard. (who is not at the school)
after this you do not have more doubts about his other story…the first one is true and this last one was just some bizarre alice in wonderland story and he just had a little lapse in reality?
@zobroward Okay, let me clarify. I meant I don’t think he explicitly made up the KKK rumor; that rumor was already going around. I cannot explain the National Guard part, you’re right that it is far-fetched, but knowing how much he cares about the Concerned Student 1950 cause I can only think he would know how detrimental it would be to post total lies knowing that he would be found out eventually. And it was absolutely insane last night on campus as far as fear goes…while 99% of rumors weren’t true, at the time people did not know what to believe and they allowed fear to get the best of them. That’s no excuse, but it wasn’t as if he was sitting in his room thinking, “Hmmm let me lie and perpetuate more fear.” I definitely think there are holes to his story, but I just don’t believe he would outright lie. But no, you’re right, I don’t 100% know.
I do believe that he was called the n-word because while I personally have not witnessed any racist events occurring, I believe they happen. I’ve had guys drive past and yell at me out of their car so it’s plenty believable that people would yell racist slurs out the back of a truck at him.
ce527m perhaps the need for even more attention as the story grew to a national level and he did not think threw the fact he would be exposed. not sure I would be so quick to give him a pass “But I truly don’t believe he was intentionally making things up.” you are very generous in your assessment!
In the attached radio interview, this Mizzou football coach sounds like he did not think this whole situation through…. Or perhaps he did but it is hidden by his extreme defensiveness… How could the football coach have thought he would not have to answer questions about this? … In any case, the coach does not come off well here due to both what he says and how he says it… Nobody will be happy with his responses… He should have been able to discuss his actions more clearly and professionally than this.
The coach also claims his designated tweeter added a hashtag without his authorization… That hashtag was interpreted as implied support for the hunger striker. Now the coach says it “should not have come out”
And after his actions toppled the president and chancellor he then says the situation with the professor trying to “muscle” media is “too complex” for him? Huh?
He ends the interview rudely and abruptly by pretty much hanging up on the interviewer, after which he cancelled further interviews. I guess he realized he needed some media coaching in crisis management.
Result? This looks less like a principled stand and more like a (poorly executed) gesture of support for part of his team with no true understanding of the fault lines nor the earthquake to come…

@tiger1307 “Maybe she used to be a police officer. That would explain everything”
What does that mean? Who are you speaking about. Frankly, most of your posts make little sense. Are you in college yet?
@2plus2ition - Thanks. It was clear he didn’t give any thought to his decision beyond siding with his players. In the meantime, a professor at MU has resigned over insisting that his students take an exam on schedule. The hate mail is very hateful.
Fox Sports of all places has an article up on the MU situation and the veracity of the protesters.
??
Presumably, the black students have the right to arm themselves.
Are you suggesting that the university change it’s regulations regarding weapons to allow black students, in particular, to have them on campus?
@OspreyCV22 that was a joke. Sorry you missed it. If you would like I can explain the context to you about the police and how they have been known to attack journalists. Do you not remember Ferguson and the McDonalds incident?
@justonedad I was being facetious. I will try and be more serious in the future. So many right leaning pundits say that the solution to the problems on the campus is to arm everyone. I was attempting to make a point by using the bizarre.
I think this is a very serious matter . I think black lives matter and the case of racism on campus needs to be addressed in a serious manner. Attempting to discredit the advocates in the Missouri case will not be productive in my opinion
All lives matter. Stating otherwise is racist.
They are doing an excellent job of that on their own.
When one has to jumpstart your grievance drive using fake scenarios and hoaxes, no need for anyone to discredit you, as you have already done that to yourself.
Re the nutrition prof resigning because of an email: MU announced they would not accept his resignation. This professor is a great professor and one of the most loved on campus (When I registered for classes the other day I actually signed up for one of his classes). I think the email was just poorly worded and he felt so badly about it that the knee-jerk reaction was for him to resign. However, the university won’t accept his resignation, I think because they know he’s a great prof.
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet. A professor of communications and journalism virtually attacked journalists who were covering the demonstration:
“Attempting to discredit the advocates in the Missouri case will not be productive in my opinion”
yeah who cares about the truth… it’s all about the agenda. somebody needs to read 1984 and animal farm.
but you also mentioned earlier “Actually I am not very informed of the facts but I will try to be more so in the future.” and in the same response gave wrong unconnected information.
How is this for some facts . Somebody needs to get a grip on racism in America The following is from USA today
"Connor Stottlemyre, 19, was arrested on suspicion of making a terrorist threat after he allegedly posted a threat on the anonymous social media app Yik Yak that read “I’m going to shoot any black people tomorrow, so be ready,” said university spokesman Mark Hornickel.
In a separate incident, Hunter Park, of Lake St. Louis, Mo., was taken into custody around 1:50 a.m.Wednesday at a residence hall at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, in Rolla, Mo., where he is a student, the school said in a statement. Parks was taken into custody and transferred to the Boone County Jail in Columbia, where he was held on $4,500 bond.
Others tweeting from the university’s Columbia campus said people used racial epithets as they drove around the school, and a group of men walking with bandannas covering their faces yelled racial slurs at black students."
I find what is going on appalling
Here are some more facts. These are from Reuters a few moments ago
"Police said Park’s threats had circulated on social media, including Yik Yak, where an anonymous post tagged ‘Columbia’ late on Tuesday read, “I’m going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see.”
“Some of you are alright. Don’t go to campus tomorrow,” another post read. “We’re waiting for you at the parking lots,” read a third post. “We will kill you.” "
We will kill you! This is really disturbing
and Reuters reported the following from Yale:
"The issue has been in focus at Yale after a fraternity turned away black guests at a Halloween party, saying, according to reports at the time, that only white women would be admitted. "
“Others tweeting from the university’s Columbia campus said people used racial epithets as they drove around the school, and a group of men walking with bandannas covering their faces yelled racial slurs at black students.”
I will bet all the money in the world that did not happen! you actually believe men in bandannas were walking around the campus today doing that?? no way,no chance!
just like the president of the student body said he was working with the national guard/state and MU police because the KKK was on campus and to stay away from windows. than he realized he made a "mistake"after his wacko claim got called out (really what kind of nonsense is that) do not believe everything you hear…not just in this situation…in every situation.
