My daughter’s future mother-in-law is probably 25 years younger than I am (75 in June), and looks it! I come from what my family called “peasant stock,” big bones for sure, and although I weigh considerably less than I used to, no one would- call me skinny! I do look younger than my age, as does future m-i-l who is slender. I think I will start ordering stuff I can return, so I can see what different styles look like on me. It’s been a while since I’ve dressed up!
There definitely is an age difference but the MOG is definitely young looking. And she certainly works hard to look the way she does. The pictures that I’m showing of her in crop tops, tight short skirts, sky high heels, bikinis(!) etc…. definitely make her look a certain way. I’m not sure if it embarrasses my daughters fiancé. He seems to accept them for who they are. His dad is only 10 months older than his mom but when I’ve shown pics it’s “oh that’s fiancees dad and sister?” His parents definitely move in a jet set social circle. We aren’t like that at all….but we live in an area where it’s not unusual so it’s not foreign to us. I find it funny…it’s a great topic of conversation. It’s like whe I stood up at my brothers wedding to a professional model ( she’s a wonderful person) and it was me and 4 professional models as bridesmaids. I mean I thought it was hysterical.
My ex sister in law works very hard to look like she’s her daughter’s peer.
Before she left my brother in law after 30 years, he always bragged about her teeny bopper persona.
I don’t want to dress like my daughter but I also don’t want to dress like my 86 year old mother either.
It’s something I don’t miss about her.
I once went to a wedding where all of the bridesmaids except for the brides much shorter sister were the brides volleyball teammates. It was similarly funny. The tallest wedding party I’ve ever seen.
Future DIL’s parents will not be attending the wedding. Her (lovely) grandparents have acted in that role most of her life, so her grandma will be MOB (thus my GMOB reference above). I joked to DH before we met them last year that they might be younger than we are as we’re 40 years older than the bride and groom. Happily, that was not the case, but we’re definitely contemporaries. DIL considers me and gram to be her maternal bookends and wants us to be in the same color, so gram picked a dress similar to mine (in navy):
I’ve had so much fun texting her about the wedding, exchanging pictures, and sharing bits about the couple. They are definitely a delightful addition to the family.
(I turned DIL on to JJs House. All the bridesmaids are ordering from there, too. They can pick any floor-length dress they want, they just need to be the same shade of minty green.)
MOG here too. Wedding is in initial planning stage so no date yet. Lovely future DIL and love her family as well. Looking forward to dress shopping!
Since you are looking for darker colors, violet or deeper shades of purple could look nice with green. Teal might look nice too.
Interesting you recommend JJ’s House. I have read negative reviews of them and would be nervous about considering them at all. D did mail order bridesmaid dress from somewhere and it was a VERY negative experience for her and another bridesmaid. Both had to order & keep 2 dresses to get one that sort of fit.
I really do like that JJ’s House dress that @ChoatieMom posted. Tea length was what I was looking for last year for son’s wedding . I remember seeing some I liked then but didn’t end up ordering from them. Perhaps/hopefully any negative issues have improved as they do have some very nice dresses
I agree. I was on your same path last year when looking for my sons wedding. I really saw a lot of dresses I liked with similar qualifications, at JJHouse. I never did order one because of the mixed reviews and was unsure of the return policy. Mixed reviews included some who had a wonderful experience and were satisfied with the quality and some who had terrible experience. Would love to hear more of the good experiences as I found more dresses I liked on their site than any others.
Same here. I found many dresses on their site that I liked but was hesitant to order because of reviews . I ordered things from Dillard’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Saks and had no problem with returns. I returned dresses that I ordered online in person to the local Dillard’s and Macy’s. I only ordered about 8 dresses online altogether until I settled on one, but probably combed through 100’s before ordering! And looked at lots of suggestions from CC folks.
Ok, I ordered the dress above from Nordstrom. My daughter doesn’t want me to wear green (her bridesmaids are wearing green), but I want to see how this dress fits, and I can do alterations at a Nordstrom store not too far away (that I can get to without spending $$$$ renting a car!).
I am officially getting excited!
Re: JJs House. I’ve only had positive experiences with them. They send out try-on dresses within two days with a return label enclosed. It’s very easy to try on a variety of dresses in multiple sizes, and they were incredibly responsive to questions, usually within hours or one day. The one I ordered for the ball that I’m wearing to the wedding was a custom order but just an inch-and-a-half larger in the bust and three inches shorter all round on the hi-low hem than the try-on dress that fit best. Also, their tailors contacted me twice to clarify the hem measurement. Delivery was about four weeks. The dress fit beautifully and is one of the most flattering things I own, thus the choice to wear it for the wedding.
DIL’s grandmother was able to wear an off-the-rack size and has already received the dress I posted above. She says it’s beautiful and fits perfectly. One of the bridesmaids has her non-custom dress, too, and is happy with it.
If you can wear one of their standard sizes and can easily try on the dresses, I think you’d be very satisfied with JJs. It’s trickier if you have to custom order (no returns), but I had no problem, so I’ve been left with a very positive impression.
Thanks for your experiences — good to know. Normally, I fit many things “off the rack,” but long items may need hemming as I don’t wear high heels.
D and other bridesmaid’s miserable experiences were with JJ’s House.
I think this dress is pretty but prefer to try things that have some reviews.

Pretty, but the fact that it is a Chinese seller with zero reviews gives me a big pause. I know many folks who got burned buying from such sellers. The quality was atrocious.
Nordstrom has a great return policy too, so good all around. The two dresses that were contenders for my son’s wedding were both from Nordstrom, by designer Todashi Shoji.
This is the dress I wound up wearing
This is the one I didn’t go with
I love the dress you wore. So pretty and such a beautiful color
@1214mom – lovely dress you chose.
I’m contemplating this dress for my S’s wedding in Oct/Nov, but early days yet.
