Perhaps rather than shawls, boleros would be a good option. I once lost a gorgeous silk shawl that just floated off my shoulders without my knowledge while leaving a theater.
Oh, my gosh. I tried that dress on at Nordstromās as a possibility for being a guest at a wedding. I was SWIMMING in fabric. Completely overwhelming. And a crinoline? Just too much.
BUT, I absolutely LOVED the fabric which was what inspired me to try it on.
Thanks for all the ideas, @marilyn and everyone. Itās fun to ponder. I keep prodding D to find a dress and even started an amazon list for her.
That is a very pretty version of a bolero. The only downside is that it is less functional than a wrap.
@BunsenBurner I love the color of the second dress you had above. D1 thinks I should wear a color like this for her wedding. I wouldnāt be comfortable in a halter though otherwise I love the dress too.
I love that blue, too! There seems to be a few dresses in this color popping up!

This was a good deal at the Davidās (1 in store, berry; also comes in Carribean blue). Not for me, but could be nice for somebody wanting a pretty sleeveless lacy dress ($42 online).

like you just bought it!
I too got a dress for a penny once at Nordstrom Rack. Iād decided I was going to return it and the salesperson told me I could have it for a penny. I also spent a lot on shoes to go with it. Another funny thing related to your post is my MOG dress was Tadashi Shoji. (I didnāt get it for a penny, but I did get it through the Nordstrom App for way less than the regular price. I had to call them because it wouldnāt let me check out, but it was worth the call).
@Colorado_mom, I canāt remember your parameters but did you see the Tadashi Shoji @BunsenBurner posted from Nordstrom? I think it would look good on you.
Itās a gorgeous blue.
I saw the link above, but it was not part of my store try-on. It is a pretty dress. So far family/bride and I have been liking me better in prints.
My dress hunt is on hold until the bigger (size 4) of this dress arrives.

I just love that 2nd one. However, sleeveless just doesnāt look as good on me anymore with my underarm pit fat bulging out. I hate that.
I think that might be a winner. Perfect floral, more solid, so not overwhelming. Fit and flare, but strategically placed ruffle. The sleeves will pull your eyes up. I hope this works!
Iām neither a soon-to-be MOB or MOG but I do enjoy looking at the many beautiful dresses on this thread. You are amazing on-line shoppers!
Iāve noticed a few posts mention Davidās Bridal. I donāt want to stoke any unnecessary fears but Davidās recently announced they were filing for bankruptcy protect. I know I would be a bit hesitant to order from them. YMMV
Best wishes to you all
Love this!
So I noticed that the dress I love did have my size. And 20% off online ordering code. I started getting very tempted.
Then I wondered how it would look in my size. I copied the picture on Bloomieās web site, pasted into a word doc, and pulled out the sides until it was about the size I thought Iād need.

Big change in my perception! Still love the color but would be way too much dress/skirt. Husband agreed; when I showed him the second picture, he just said āno.ā Not re permission, but re looks. So I saved $200 .
Then we started talking about why someone thinks clothes do or do not look good on someone else. He was thinking style. I think color/tone plays a big albeit often subconscious role. Back in the day I played with Color Me Beautiful concepts from the book. Now I can tell just by laying a garment across my arm whether itās a good color for me. Some flatter; some depress.
(I also mentioned to husband that at present, one can wear any length skirt - everything from mini to floor length is ok. So I can pull anything from my closet, no matter how old, and the length at least wonāt be out of style.)
So whatās the first thing that makes you tell someone, you look good in that? Style? Fit? Color?
I still think itās a gorgeous dress, style and flattering both ways!
Exactly why all shapes, sizes tall/short, thinner/wider, skin tone etc. should be represented in clothing models!
What makes me tell some they look good? Me actually loving the piece they are wearing and the confidence with which they wear it. They should look comfortable in it. Brighten them up.
LOL on the photo stretch idea. For me Iād need a way to do it just on the bottom of the photo.
Not sure what attributes of clothing catch attention the most. (Maybe Iām just more taken with smiles and friendliness?). I will say at church, where many of us often wear pants, a nice skirt or dress outfit will stand out. Or a pretty scarf. And good posture, which I donāt have myself, is always a plus.
Fun story - at the Nordstrom entryway on Tues, a gal about age 30 for some reason decided to pay me a compliment, āI like your dress!ā. Yep, it was my simple pink print shopping dress we all liked in earlier photos. It plays havoc on my hair in the dressing room, but I wear it to show example nice fit to the saleshelp (ha, when it exists) or stylist. Never expected anybody else to notice.
