The MOB/MOG Dress Extravaganza!

I just received an email that my Nordstrom dress (the long green one) has shipped! So I should see it by the end of the week.

@thumper1 I like the wine as well. My daughter likes the navy better but she’s flexible. I need my other daughter to get her bridesmaid dress so I can see how my dress coordinates ((I don’t like the color but it’s not my wedding
)

Wine is one of my favorite colors. If I weren’t wearing navy at our son’s wedding, I would have opted for this dress from Azazie:

Go with the wine!

@ChoatieMom I think the dress you linked is one of the ones my daughter suggested to me! I decided to start out with Nordstrom since returns are easy and they can alter if needed

I really like the quality of this brand. Here is an example of a navy dress.

This brand is $$$ but usually fits like a glove!

I am surprised so many dresses posted are so form fitting, quite unforgiving for bodies that show a bit of excess.

My sister who has had her 3 D’s married just said she’d be happy to come and look at MOG dresses with me. I’ve seen a few promising ones on Nordstrom’s website, so may try going there and get an idea of how I look in different sizes, brands and styles and get a better feel for what would make me happiest, and try some garments on.

I’m not sure that there will be any attendants or colors for the wedding. We shall see. At least I may get a better idea of what I’m aiming for and how I lookin some of the styles I’ve been eying.

S will be sending out “save the dates” and posting on the family thread to let folks know so they can plan accordingly. He does want his cousins and close relatives to attend.

I love the one-shoulder one!

And they are on models who are almost 6 feet tall and are quite slim.

Some websites give the height of the model wearing the dress. I really like that reference.

While my physical body can handle a more fitted dress, I do not like to wear form fitting for the most part. And for a wedding or event, I like to be able to move around very freely and easily! I also really, really dislike the idea of a “gown” or anything long for me. And to be honest, I don’t like fancy and frill and lace and too much sparkle. Simple.

I came across this one on Light In The Box that really spells “me”. Just the right amount of dressy, easy to wear, good length. While there are lots of color choice boxes, it doesn’t seem to have many in stock, BUT am saving as an example of something I would wear.

@abasket I much prefer an A line fit, which is most flattering on me, but it does need to have some structure. The dress you linked is pretty in its simplicity and looks elegant and comfortable, but on me, it would not be flattering as there is too much loose fabric. Actually, I don’t think it’s that flattering on the model! I think there is too much extra fabric. I wore something not quite as loose as that to my daughter’s college graduation and did not like how I looked in any of the photos.

I wore this dress in a different color to a wedding last summer. It was the perfect fit and so flattering. I got several compliments. I wish I could find something similar but longer. The A line cut looks best on me, and so comfortable.

The dresses I linked in my previous post might be a little more snug than I like, but I’ll wait and see. They should be arriving this week.

I like how JJs house shows the dress on a both a thin and a plus-size model with height/measurements for both. Some dresses scale larger better than others.

Now you’ve done it, @cbreeze! This thread is about to morph into “How Much Weight Will You Lose And What Type Of Under Armor Will You Be Wearing To Your Kid’s Wedding?” :joy:

@ChoatieMom I agree about being able to know measurements, etc.

One thing I like about Nordstrom and some other online retailers, is being able to read reviews as well as see some reviewers who post pictures of themselves, along with the size they purchased and their measurements. I waver between sizes depending on the cut so this can help me decide which size might work better for me. Sometimes there is other usual info not apparent in the photo, like - the material is really heavy, or flimsy/cheap, or the bodice has uncomfortable boning, etc.

I found it helpful to watch videos of Nordstrom’s SAs describing the details not usually seen in the description, like lining is soft, fabric is stretchy, etc.

Future DIL had a lot of this brand on her mood boards. The slit is probably too high but possibly a seamstress could fix that?

I also wore a long Vince Camuto dress in navy as MOB for my youngest. I also got mine on sale at Nordstrom for around $60.00. It was semi trumpet style and while form fitting held things in. I think it was one of the most figure flattering dresses I’ve worn.
My daughter wore a Dress the Population dress as a bridesmaid and they are nice brand to look at. A bit more expensive but they don’t scream bridesmaid so can be worn again.
I love the dress @abasket linked and if I had gone short I’d likely have ordered it but I agree with another poster that it’s probably not the most figure flattering with so much fabric.
If you can I found the best was to just order a lot of dresses in different brands and sizes and you’ll soon discover what brand and style works best. It also gives you an idea of sizing in different brands. When I found something I liked I look at it on several websites and look for the easiest and best returns. The nice thing about Nordstrom is if the dress is a maybe you can keep it while you keep looking. If Amazon had it I liked that I could return it to Whole Foods.

That is the dress my daughter wore in forest green. The slit wasn’t that high, the model is likely pretty tall.

I like how the SAs disclose the size of the item on display and their height for reference.

Yes, I’ve found the videos and comments quite helpful. Several have reinforced my aversion to beading and sequins in saying they were leaving a trail of them from when they 1st tried on the garment and everywhere they went.
