The Most Asked Question

I know this question has been asked a MILLION times, and you all can
t say for sure, but I was hoping you could give me a general idea of my chances of getting in. I
ve wanted to go to USNA for quite some time now, and will be a Sophomore this year.

Our school doesn
t allow us to take AP classes freshman year, so we have Pre-AP classes, which is the highest you can take; Sophomore year there
s minimal AP classes we can take

FRESHMAN YEAR
Pre-AP Algebra 1 pt. 1-C (I know...it
s bad)
Intro. to Media- A
Gym/Health-B (I didn
t do great with the final exam for health)
Spanish 2- B ( I also took Spanish 1 in 8th grade and received a B too)
Pre-AP Biology- A
Pre-AP English- A
Pre-AP World History- A
Academic Enhancement- A
Finance- A

GPA: 3.67

SOPHOMORE YEAR (Projected Grades)
Pre-AP Algebra 1 pt. 2- B (Going to try for an A, however)
Gym/Health- A
Pre-AP Earth Science- A
Pre-AP English- A
Spanish 3- A
Pre-AP Geometry- A
AP History- A

And for the last two years, these are the classes I`m hoping to take:

JUNIOR YEAR AP English-A AP US History-A Algebra 2- B Journalism 2- A Journalism 3- A Chemistry- A (I`m debating on whether I should try for AP Chem and not do Journalism 3)

SENIOR YEAR College Gov`t-A College English- A Trig- A or B Pre-Calc-A or B Physics- A or B Journalism 4 (or 3, depending on Junior year classes)

I know my current grades arent stellar, but Im really going to buckle down in the coming year(s). As for my Extra Curriculars, Im on the Track team (Varsity), Im in the International Club, I participate in my youth group, Im planning on getting a job next year, Ill be working on the school paper in junior year, Im going to start volunteering at the local food bank next summer, and Im going to try an go to Girl`s State summer after junior year and also Summer Seminar.

I
m in great health, BUT (And this worries me a whole, whole lot), I
ll need waivers. I have flat feet, and I understand that they aren
t the hardest thing in the world to get, but I
ll need another one because since I was 8, I
ve had some tics. I
ve never taken medication, and it used to be shoulder shrugging and facial, but since then it
s decreased to just facial, and is mainly eye blinking, and is minimal. If I
m not thinking about them, they don
t happen, as I
m told by others who notice. I
ve been reading on how there are SOME people admitted to the Academy with a waiver. I
m guessing that it
ll have to completely disappear. If that
s so, how long would my tics have to be gone? A year, two years? If I understand correctly, you can
t have been on , medication within the year you apply, but I
ve never taken medication and can control them when needed and it
s fairly minimal. (Of course, in a high-stress environment, who knows, though I
m 99% sure I could control them.)

If I got a report from neurologist saying that the tics no longer apply to me, would I have a chance at a waiver? They`ve decreased so much in the past few years that I think I have a shot at them completely disappearing in the next couple of years.

I appreciate you taking time to answer my many, many questions, but this is something I really want and will do whatever it takes to achieve my goal. Thank you!

I also have an extra, random question. I was just wondering, as I saw the pictures up on Facebook if the Plebes receiving their computers…what brand of computers do they get? Just curious.

Again, thank you!

I also forgot to mention that I
m going to try to become an officer for international Club in 12th grade, and Junior year I
m going to apply for Girl
s State. I
ll also probably be in the National Honor Society too.

Ethnicity?
Location?

Two big factors in the modern day admissions meeting

-Ethnicity:Female Caucasian
-Location: Virginia

Your grades and activities look great of course but it’s important to keep in mind that VA is a competitive state. Being a lady should help a smudge though. It’s important to remember that many people with less competitive profiles than you will make it - sometimes there is seemingly no rhyme or reason to the admissions board.

My old company officer had some tics…and unless it affects your ability to perform I wouldn’t worry about it. Make sure to apply for ROTC as well - remember what your end goal is, because being an officer is ultimately what should be most important for you.

Thank you, I appreciate the answer. I guess it`ll just come down to how the other candidates profiles are.

Yep, you compete first in your district and state pools. Virginia is undoubtedly one of the most competitive. As Zoo said, while females are no longer deemed a “priority” target, thus considered somewhat distinctly from the general profile groupings, for admission purposes, the numbers reveal it beats being male.

But the chronic request of “chance me” is essentially chronically wasted time beyond comparing one’s personal profile against the general class profile updated each year. It’s tough for novices to grasp both the complexity and difference in a Service Academy appointment process vs. a secular, civilian highly selective institution. While there are similarities, the differences far outnumber them making the question null and void, if understandable.

And this has become even more unpredictable in light of the rapidly escalating applicant numbers which relates to who and how applicants are counted, while final appointments reveal rather dramatic decline in standard scores and traditional measures. All of this simply illustrates it is literally impossible to do more than speculate, guess, and throw darts.

Yes, I understand how no one can say what will get me in. I understand how it changes year from year as well, depending on the other candidates. I`ll just keep working hard and try my best.

Can I ask the same question about me? Sorry but i’m a junior in high school and my averages have always been about a 3.8 out of 4.0 in my core classes Anne i’m a varsity athlete, reporter/editor for my school newspaper, all new York state violinist 4x, and about 5 other music related extra curriculars. I’m a caucasian woman from new York and my self administered cfa is well in or above average. Any shot? Replies are awesome

Yes. Decent shot. IF … and I emphasize IF you pursue an appointment. Remember, you must be 3 Qed to enter competition for an appointment (or receive on in light of an LOA.) Good luck. Do you have any African or American Indian relatives you might claim in your heritage? That would be enormously helpful in NY. And increasingly, being female is of less consequence beyond having a smaller pool to compete for in getting the 20% USNA inducts annually.

Pit yours vs. the class profiles to glean a more “precise” response, altho in the end, as noted, there is no answer for your question barring novices being more accurate in predicting you WILL NOT be appointed. In other words, none can tell you the chances you will … and MANY can tell you with the chances you won’t when that is readily apparent. That isn’t at all apparent in your case.

I think it looks great–better than my stats! But apply for the Summer Seminar too; that can only help, and also give you an idea of what life at the Academy is like if you
re accepted to SS. Of course, it
ll just depend on what the other candidates profiles look like as well.

Thanks for the response and my family is mainly Italian immigrants so no real minority advantage. I’ll definitely consider applying to summer seminar. If my parents are veryclose friends with a nys senator will that help with a nomination? I don’t want to count on just that

Don
t count on getting “favors” or anything—they have to look objectively at everyone else and can only nominate so many people. Apply to all nomination sources available. It
ll only help though, especially if you show your senator you`re really motivated to attend.

thanks for all the responses you guys have helped a ton

Your quite welcome…hope you get in.
