The Most Exciting Part of Pre-College--Dorm Shopping!!

So I'm going to be a freshman at college this fall and I was wondering what everyon else in my situation is planning on getting. Any websites you suggest? Any specific products? And things to stay away from? Any must-have splurge items? Thanks!!

Hit up Bed, Bath and Beyond, dude. They have this bedding set that comes in a hamper that I like a lot - everything matches, it’s the right size and it’s almost all you need for your bed.

But yeah between BB&B and Target you can find everything you need. And don’t shop online, it’s really fun to actually go there and pick stuff out.

Ikea. That’s where everyone I know went lol.
I also 2nd BB&B and Target for linen and such.

places like Ross are indispensable if you need dishes or silverware or anything like that.

The other great thing about Bed Bath & Beyond is that they have a college student program where you pick out everything you want in the store, they scan it and crosscheck the list with the items available at the store closest to your college, and then send the list to that store, where they hold your items until the set pickup date.

Even I, a guy, likes the shopping aspect of pre-college. New wardrobe, new bed, new laptop, new everything! Only problem is paying for it all.

Target .

@zchryevns: Oh wow. I didn’t even know that! Thanks for telling me. As soon as I figure out where I’m going, I’m going to look into that.

I lovvved target. I actually bought all my sheets AFTER school started because right in september targets Xlong sheets go to 5 dollars for a set.

Bed Bath and Beyond, Target and Walmart-You’ll find everything you need.

There is a sticky/thread at the top of the parents cafe that might be helpful … this is the link if it works …

You are not alone with the pre-college shopping excitedness! I’ve always been excited and I even confess that I’m 75% done with all my shopping :X Majority of it being online.

I bought this desk organizer with all supplies included for only 16 bucks off ebay. Also, I kinda splurged on my bedding and got a Lacoste bedding set on Macy’s for 100 bucks! I mean, if I’m possibly using this for 4ish years, I might as well make it nice! And I got a backpack online for 55… expensive again, but it’s durable and not an easily broken bag  On dormbuys.com I bought a shower caddy set for 13 dollars! Comes included with a shower caddy, towels, shower slippers, toothbrush case, etc. And I’m not disappointed with my buying purchases.

Some stuff I’ve bought at Wal-Mart were a hamper (8 dollars!) and a brita water pitcher, which I’m sure will come in handy since I don’t want all these water bottles lying around my dorm room.

The other stuff (whiteboard, wastebasket, etc) I plan on just stealing from my sister’s room when she moves out this year :P

Other than all those stuff, I just need to get the small things like hygiene things, cleaning supplies and yeah.

Oh geez, I hope I’m not the only one who’s totally over-excited. But this is coming from a person who finds buying school supplies as extremely fun. But whatever you decide to do, make sure it’s something you like. If you don’t like shopping online, then just shop around in real life. I just find shopping online exciting because I’m a shopaholic when it comes to online shopping  hahaha

Amazon.

Free shipping. And two day free shipping, for a year, with an ‘.edu’ email.

We’ll be using them for the bulky stuff - tower fan, desk lamp, waste basket, laundry hamper, shower caddy, pillow, maybe a comforter, mattress pad/egg crate, second set of towels/sheets (at least I’ll send a WASHED first set with the kid, after that, he is on his own LOL), etc. woot.

Plug for Charlie’s Soap laundry detergent powder as well, now sold on Amazon.

I’m really excited too! Just wondering if most people get stuff from the same places, do lots of people end up getting the same bedding etc? I’m an international and wondering if it’s worth finding something unique back home and then taking it with me… Suggestions/advice?

Would it be the end of the world if another kid in your dorm had the same sheets? It’s not like anyone is paying attention anyway.

If you’re an international student, I would imagine the pain of bringing bedding all the way to college. Sure, you should bring some mementos that remind you of home but for big things like bedding, you should just check out stores near your college. Having the same bedding as someone isn’t bad at all.

If you’re international, do not bring excessive stuff. It’s going to be in a pain in the ass hauling it to wherever. You can buy most of the stuff when you get to the US. I just brought a carry on and 1 checked bag for college, and bought the rest of the stuff here.

I get 90% of the things I need from Target, 10% from Sams Club/Costco.

And dorm shopping, ugh, hate it.
