I wonder why everyone is dying to go to Princeton, Yale or Harvard. Brown and Columbia are hardly mentioned.
Is Columbia the least prestigious?
Why Cornell? It’s so easy to get in. Which is the most selective?
I really want to know what you guys really want in these schools.

Harvard -prestige
Yale-undergrad focus
Pton- undergrad focus
Brown-open curriculum
Dartmuth-d plan
Columbia-dumb piece of s!@#, not applying
Upenn-safety
Cornell-safety

I wouldn't really say that Penn is a safety...

Penn is a safety? Since when?

yup i don't think penn is safety either...i'm happy if i get accepted into any of these (didn't apply dartmouth and columbia). all are supreme apex-high reaches for me...

guys, forget about that clown. Ppl who say Penn is a safety are those that don't apply, or apply and don't get in, or just extremely anal and arrogant and never gonna go there anyways...all three possibilities result in me never meeting any of these dumb*** who call Penn a safety.

Touche. I think Penn's pretty tight. And in general, all the Ivies are selective in their own right.

i think its hilarious when ppl call ivies safeties...wht arrogancccccccce

amen chocolatechip
GO BIG RED!!

i believe the only people who have the right to call the ivies safeties are the indian people who are geniuses and go to IIT.

Not really...I mean, I think the few Indians who have the right to label the Ivies as safties are like rare exceptions, just like the very very very very very few ppl who are in the states and call Ivies safties. They're the exceptions, not the rule.

my apologies catch.

we watched a video about india and iit when i was in world history and it's been the stereotype of indians in my head.

Yeah but IIT's are so hard to get into that the people that do would get into the Ivies with some ease. I have heard of ppl in India would do label the Ivies as safties, but remember that those ppl have "earned the right" in that they have worked very hard to accomplish their goals, and do stand out from the rest of us.

The thing is, IIT of India is like QingHua or BeiDa of China. You test into it. So...they don't need scrap metal of ECs or nothing of those sorts. I talk to a lot of my friends back in the mainland (China) and they are trying to get into China's Top universities...and believe me, the application process is too different for a comparison. Apples and Oranges. There will always be ppl at the VERY top of each applicant pool who, yes, can indeed get into anywhere they want. But for the rest...most of the world's population, Ivies will never be considered as safeties...doesn't matter where they go/get into.

what is IIT?

Indian Institute of Technology...#1 tech school in the world...ahead of MIT, Caltech, Stanford, etc

IIT = Indian Institute of Technology
Admission to IITs is extremely difficult. Only the top 2 percent of the applicants are admitted and to get into a decent department, about half a percent is a reasonable corresponding figure. Only around 3500 get admission each year

WHy dont colleges like the ivy leagues require their own tests for admission to their colleges, like seperate tests aside from the standardized ones given to all students? Then they can base applicants on one additional factor, giving them more accurate results of a student's abilities.

More tests=more money=more stress on applicants (imagine if you are applying to ten colleges...and each required a test...yea..not pretty)=increases the gap between the applicants which have an edge (rich/fairly well off applicants w. time and resources to prepare) and the poorer, underprevileged applicants who might get intimidated and not apply at all...and even if they apply, they will be much less prepared than the other applicants...(+ a lot more reasons...but, I have a lit analysis to write..so no more procrastination para mi). One last thing...US colleges don't admit by numbers (as long as you are "within range"...you have a shot)...that's what differentiates it from the rest of the world.

because US colleges, especially ivies, look for diversity....80% of all ivy applicants are capable of doing the work and have exceptional "abilities," but only about 20% display the right amount of ability, academic curiosity, and extra curricular activity to be granted admission
