Yeah, but most schools don’t consider Intramural Aramaic Hangman a “sport.”

Well, we DO have the number one Quiz Bowl team in the nation . . . but our athletic teams are solid too! IIRC correctly, we were highly successful in a number of sports last year, taking in several championships in women’s DIV III.

Well, all I can say is that based on what I think many students (and parents) value, this can be much more useful than USNWR. I agree a few data points can be tweaked and weightings adjusted per individual taste. I may just pump this into my own spreadsheet and do just that for my S’s use.

“•Great College Town: Columbia University”

That is such an oxymoron. Since when did NYC become a college town??

I just showed the OP to a few friends from MIT and Duke who have come over to my apartment to chillax…we’ve all come to a consensus that this thread is subjective bullcrap.

/thread.

EDIT:

Ahh, forgive moi. You lost me at the second part. If you by any way suggest other prospective students look at this list to decide which college to apply to, then you’re insane. I can’t believe people think they can put personal experiences (which don’t have to centered around sports or “balls” (hopefully this isn’t a sexual inuendo)) and objectify it. FAIL.
Hawkette let me edit what you wrote:

"Lets not take this too seriously. Its a joke thread with little regard to help future prospective students. This is for stupidity’s sake and people will definitely not apply different weights and ratings or give a damn, and even I was surprised at how dumb this thread has become. But it can be a misleading way to look at this crap for people actually and genuinely interested in searching for colleges in hopes of having a well-rounded undergraduate experience.

I really can’t believe you wasted time for this, hawkette.

I think Illinois should be a 4 for fun ( too frat dominated) dumpy town and sports. UW>UM socially. So the 5 vs 4 is fine IMHO. Even though UM is a little down in sports the name is still a 5–for now.

And Dukie, don’t be so sanctimonious. If Duke did not have basketball it would drop in popularity by a measurable amount. If you actually had football you might understand better that football weekends can be fabulous experiences.

Football>basketball as far as overall gameday experiences are concerned. Not even close. Which is why I don’t think Duke necessarily deserves the “5” ranking for sports. :)

I’ve never been able to get a handle on Stanford’s social life, so this rating surprises me. I used to live in the area and have visited the campus often (tho’ not during weekend evenings). The campus always seemed spread out and quiet, the couple of football games I attended were not well attended by Stanford fans, and I am not under the impression that the Greek system is all that dominant. From someone who (really) knows, what is the source of the perfectly-rated social life at Stanford?

I personally think this is a good idea. There are obviously a few scores I would tweak, though. Stanford for example is generally described with social life in mind, but that’s relative to some schools with weak social lives (some of the top schools…), so I would give Stanford an honest 4.5 for social life. You can’t give Stanford and Penn State (or most public schools) the same social life scores. I also think Harvard’s social life score should be raised to 3.5, but that’s purely unfounded haha.

Also, you shouldn’t use USNews rankings for your academic score, because USNews rankings are already based heavily on non-academic factors.
Instead, try recalculating this ranking with Peer Review scores from USNews, and use those to replace the current scores for “academics”. I’d definitely want to see that version, and I think it would be more accurate/relevant.

YYYYYYYYAAAAAAYYYYYYYY Hawkette made up some more numbers to try to ■■■■■ about Notre Dame… wooooooohooooooooo

You need another category for puck sports. Does 30% sound like a fair weighting?

On that note, where can I even find the peer review scores for these schools?

^^ Just wait!! I am pretty sure that the new PA scores will be posted here by the end of next weekend for the '11 USNWR best college ranking. So, stay tuned!! ;p

hawkette, why did you only include universities and not LACs?

BTW Hawkette…how did you create Penn’s ranking? Its not a 7-25 ranked school. But you didnt put it with HYPSM… Maybe you should use the real USNWR 1-4. Thus giving Penn a 4.45…wahwahwah tied with the almighty Notre Dame??? WAh?!?@?

I almost peed my pants when i realized Penn was as good as the almighty Notre Dame!!!

Hawkette, how can you give 5s to HYSM+Caltech? This is completely wrong. And yes, as PABank says, why isn’t Penn a 5 if you’re going by USNWR rankings?
I’ll tell you what.
You’re simply going on by what people tell you here at CC. Because HYPSM is the epitome of all things, its obviously a 5.

Like I said, a complete joke.

i definitely think d3 schools get the short end of the stick here as far as athletics are concerned. as far as my own personal experience goes, i can only talk about uchicago - while varsity sports aren’t a big social draw by any means, a massive number of the teams are actually really good. IMs definitely get people in. and yeah, we do more than aramaic hangman. =P

Yea I’ll look forward to an update of these rankings, with 2011 USNews peer review scores replace the current “academic” scores

It’s just her opinion guys. Take a chill pill.
