The Move-in Process???

Anyone willing to describe the move-in process on the 17th? When I arrived at my little LAC "several" years ago I remember 10 orange-shirted Orientation volunteers surrounding our car and suddenly it was emptied and everything ended up in my room. Kind of like Hogwarts, now that I think about it. That was Freshman year only, of course, after that we were on our own.

What's the process at Cornell? D will be on the 4th floor of Dickson - it sounds like there will be upperclassmen helping out. Given the size of the dorm, I'm thinking that labelling the boxes might be a good idea if others will be carrying them. Then again, if it's just us doing the hauling up 3 flights, I'll pack some extra jugs of water and junk clothes to change into.

the same thing with campus voulnteers pretty much happened to me as well. There were plenty of people around with carts and dollies to help out.

gomestar, are the campus volunteers ALWAYS available on move-in day?

The fact that we're only allowed to park near the dorm for 20 minutes worries me. I have a bad leg and can't really carry packages up stairs because I have to hold the stair rail with one hand, which leaves only one hand free to carry anything. If there are no volunteers, my daughter is going to have to do almost all the carrying, and I don't think she can get it done in 20 minutes.

I ask because when I helped my son move in to the University of Maryland at College Park three years ago, there wasn't a volunteer to be seen (although the literature had said there would be plenty). We did it all ourselves in the allotted time (which was 30 minutes). But I hadn't injured my leg then.

I'm not sure about the always part, just sharing my experience - I'd be surprised if they said you only have 20 minutes and then leave you to your own, though.

There will be a ton of people volunteering. All of the orientation leaders are required to help move-in students on that day. In addition, there is an entire move-in crew that will be there to help get your stuff up quickly. I had a very similar experience of literally pulling up and opening the trunk being descended upon by about 10 big guys and magically all of my stuff appeared outside of my second floor room. I think I carried my computer bag and suitcase up. The person in charge of orientation and move-in is incredibly efficient and has the whole process well-planned. To make things even faster, I'd suggest labeling all your boxes with your dorm and room number so that nothing gets lost and you don't have to spend time telling all of the people helping you where everything goes.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you initially bring all of your stuff into your room just in bags and boxes it will make your room seem super small.. but don't worry.. store stuff in your closet and under your bed and everything definately gets better than your first impression.

the move in people have carts where you can put all of your stuff on them and go up the elevator. The 20 mins is not clocked, so don't stress out if you cant get it all up that fast. Also, once you have everything unloaded outside, one parent can go move the car, while you, your other parent, and the movers move stuff up.

lol @ car stresses...

thank god i'm from texas and flying in with two suitcases o_O...oh and at midnight too :P

PUT YOUR NAME ON ALL YOUR BOXES IF YOU WANT TO MAKE IT FASTER!!!!
(otherwise orientation do it, and it might get messed up)

be nice to the orientation volunteers, we do not get paid!!! (especially those assigned to balch or dickson!)

how nice is nice - do I need to bring you treats?

bring vodka

bring a lot of vodka.. but stash a bottle for yourself because all of your hallmates will try to mooch.

back in my day i brought four handles two liters and a bottle of hpnotiq because thats what was cool back then

I dont know if I would bring the hypnotiq...

unless you bring hennessey too

On a more practical note:

Has the Thurston Avenue Bridge been reopened yet? Will it be open during move-in?

http://www.aff.cornell.edu/SpecialConditions/CampusConstruction/

October 31st perhaps.

the bridge should be open...OUGH nvrmnds....just looked it up...its not set to open FULLY until october >_>

do we have to pack all of our things in labeled boxes? im just afraid that a box will end up at the wrong room or one will be opened or stolen. its there any other way to get past this?
