The Myth of The Well-Rounded Target Applicant?

Hi guys,

I've heard a lot from well informed people that adcoms want to see a well-rounded student body, not heaps of well-rounded applicants. I asked a good number of people this question because I thought that I was at a disadvantage ,in terms of ECs, for having two "spikes", which are finance (the most interesting) and science.

Is it true that its better to have more focused ECs (Trading club, Giving in-school seminars on professional networking, finance editor for school magazine, starting your own business) instead of having it scattered all over the place (Debate, Science, Art,volunteering at a nursing home etc.)? As I said in the first paragraph, Im the more focused type. And my intended major happens to be finance :D I do, however, have achievements outside of the two areas, like sports.

Yep - colleges would much rather see you focused in something that interests you as opposed to someone who joins every club his/her school has to offer.

You seem pretty focused to me. Two main interests, which could turn into a major and a minor in college.

In my opinion, that is not too many main areas. Now when someone has around 15 areas when each of them are just clubs for the sake of clubs, that is ridiculous.

At information sessions, the college admissions people we’ve seen have said they like to see prolonged involvement in something - both academically and as EC’s. And passion seems to be the current buzzword.

I have a small question
I want to be more focused so should I write unrelated ECs in my resume. If my spike are Math + Econ + Science, so should I write in the resume my ECs about sports (member of football team) or many projects about humanity ( teach English for poor children)…?
Or I can write anything in the resume then the admission staff will see my main strength/spikes

You should most certainly include those. They shine a positive light upon you. If you do a lot with math, economics, and/or science, they will be able to tell. Being an athlete and teaching English to poor children cannot hurt.
