The MYTH or the FACT

is it true that cornell's workload could kill an average person? im looking into maybe doing a bio major at CALS and i was wondering how heavy the workload is. i hear all these stories that cornell is the hardest ivy to get out of

there are many many myths about Cornell out there.

...unfortunately I don't consider this one of them.

ahh......crap (I hope you mean the true myth is Cornell is the hardest Ivy ..... not that Cornell could kill the average person.....I'm too young to die :( )

Compared to my friends at other ivies, I have more work.

Enough to kill me? Hell no.

"average" students don't go to cornell, however.

A student's doctor made her drop orgo because it was negatively affecting her heart and blood pressure.

It's not an average workload. Average kids don't get in.

alright, I'm not an average student (because I got in) ... phew ... other than I'll start preparing for my classes with few more extra pushups, crunches, sit-ups .... etc (jk)

It's a fact: all average kids die from the workload and are dumped into mass graves after prelims :).

When I was there, in the stone age, it was a very tough school.

About a month ago, at an alumni function, I sat next to a dermatologist who had majored in bio, around when I attended. She talked mostly about how hard she worked there, and wished she had more fun. I know what she means.

On the other hand, she said that by comparison medical school was no problem, and that she felt she was extremely well prepared compared to her fellow medical students.

When I looked at colleges for D#1 a couple years ago it seemed like many of the other schools that one might apply to along with Cornell were also reputed to be quite tough. Perhaps at this level there is no easy way out.

I think a lot may depend on one's major. A real lot, actually. But bio is not going to be one of the easy ones.

Also, maybe everything's different now.

Like monydad, I attended Cornell back when dinosaurs roamed the Arts Quad.

The work was tough, but it was certainly not impossible. If you have the self-discipline to force yourself to study when there are more appealing activities available and the maturity to face up to academic problems and seek help when you need it, you should be fine.

How about majors like Government, Economics, English, Philosophy, and Psychology? Are those as tough as the usual pre-med and engineering majors?

it'd be difficult to find a purely easy major (except maybe hotel ;)) as all classes have difficult aspects. For instance, econ requires a certain type of analytical thinking not needed in bio or chem, english requires great writing and communicating skills (clearly not necessary to be a doctor :)). Engineering requires alot of math while ilr requires alot of precise reading and writing. Certain majors will be easier for certain people and vise versa.
