the mythical ways of affirmative action

ok so im a black student, and from almost every source except my guidance counselour i heard that being a black female greatly increases my chances for top colleges. is that true to any extent. i mean i think it as at a time but right now i dont think it makes a difference anymore. am i wrong? i mean my academics are that bad, my guidance counselor is very positive when i meet with her. any insight?

Being a Black female DOES greatly increase your chances.

With that said though, there IS still a minimum threshold that you have to cross in terms of academics.

However, if you have good grades, decent test scores, and good teacher recs, then I'd say you're pretty much set.

Colleges want diversity.

Huge increase in chances.

mmm ok. that works.

they want diversity but the stats at alot of schools is still very small, the percentages seem rather depressing

Yes, and no.

Some colleges are blind to race- they won't look at your race in decided whether or not you'll be admitted. The last time I checked, this was true for the UC schools (I think a proposition was passed in California to clear up affirmative action.)

i think the same thing is now true for Michigan after Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger in 2003

yeah, some dont look at what you mark down, but they sure as heck can read it. Throw it somewhere in your essay and problem solved if they dont look at what you mark down.

seriously if a Latino or Black student that has good GPA/SATS/ECS/etc. they can get in top colleges whereas a white or an asian student with the exact same stats will not

As much as people hate it or love it, stellarrice is right.

yay. i guess. and yeah i heard about that in michigan but not cali. i still like umich

trust me, in my school some of the acceptances are so random. 95% of the school population are chicano and sometimes when they here acceptances they are like what the heck. Im not saying they had things completely down on the dumps when it comes to GPA and SATs but they are not powerhouses.

thats the problem, in some places if you get in people will always say, oh its cuz she's BLANK, like any real achievements ive made would just be ignored. id hate that.

Well once you're in there, make a name for yourself and it will relieve that mentality.

I agree with panic. Im a black male, and I'd hate for somebody to think that I got into a good school because of my race. But as much as I hate to admit it, that probably WILL be the reason

The entire system is messed up. When an Asian student succeeds, it's always because of he/she IS Asian.

Don't forget, the Chinese Exclusionary Act, transcontinental railroad (almost) slave labor, and Japanese internment do not equate "historically disadvantaged" minorities!

Despite the implementation of Prop. 209, admission readers at the UCs have admitted that they use college essays and zip codes to determine a student's race.

yes they do, that is why my superintend told me to throw the race card in my essay

Asking fer race is such an idiotic question.
