i keep getting these emails inviting me to this group and i finally decided to see what it is but it costs money... is it a scam? it seems really fake to me plus i have never heard of it before

College Confidential has a lot of threads on this topic already. I suggest you search for them. Here’s a link to one of them that I participated in (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1110978-national-society-hs-scholars.html?highlight=nshss); it contains a link to another thread on the topic, too.

My take-away message has been, it’s a scam if you think it is, and it isn’t a scam if you think it isn’t.

I would not encourage my kid to pay money (either my money or her own) for what NSHSS offers. JMO.

It’s not a scam, exactly, just not a real honor. The bar to get invited is very low, and the only requirement for membership is to pay a membership fee.

I’m in it. Yeah, it costs you to be in it, which is kinda odd, but I think it’s legit. I don’t know if it helps in college admissions or not, not sure if it helped me or not.
