The National Society of High School Scholars

Scam - “a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, esp. for making a quick profit; swindle.” Dictionary.com

This is a confidence game (they make people feel good about themselves, even someone who was expelled from high school and in no way is a notable high school scholar) in an attempt to make a quick profit. Seems like the textbook definition to me.

I got the same letter too. And when I carried it in to my bio teacher she rolled her eyes at it (because she knew what it was) before I even said anything and said it’s a scam.

…
I got this letter last year when I was a sophomore… I my mother paid the money. I did not see the point cuz the scholarships were limited and small, but never mind…
And I received nothing but a certificate :x Sometimes I get ■■■■■■■■ emails inviting me to come to their summits, parties or whatever ( I don’t remember what it was)… HOWEVER, how do they expect me to come to Denver or New York for a weekend if I live in Bulgaria?!

I do not care if NSHSS is scam; I just what to tell everyone who received this letter: this is USELESS

Hmm … people pay an organization money and the organization uses other people’s money to pay some people some returns on their money … while all the while someone is laughing all the way to the bank … reminiscent of Bernard Madoff, perhaps? Glad I was incredulous when this letter came and promptly put it in the recycling. They are still hounding us to join with e-mails. Anyone know which arm of our justice system investigates scams like these? I for one am sick and tired of HS students (most of whom are minors) being used as pawns in shameless marketing schemes.

As soon as I saw that you had to pay $60… I knew it was a scam.

I got a letter in the mail saying that I have been selected for the NSHSS, is this progaram legit or is it a scam? Help in CC, you all know best. They are asking for 60$ im membership fee. I have a feeling its a scam, but idk :(

sorry i didn’t know where to post this thread

[The National Society of High School Scholars](http://www.nshss.org/) {site look legit tho?}

I remember getting something like that. With all sorts of “honorary” (meaning they just wrote down famous names) members. It’s a scam dude. No real award costs money

It’s a scam.

SCAM! but a lot of my friends paid for it…they’ll just take your money.

You too can have a star named after you, Just send me the money.

Super scam. They just want money. Go do community service and you’ll get a better rep than this.

Besides this thread, if you do a search on this forum and over on the Parents forum, you’ll see this question arises frequently.

^ Googled’s him. Mr. Finck is a legitimate reporter for the NY Daily News.

As for the thread: We got cords to wear at graduation today, and some of my friends said they were getting one for the NSHSS. They said they never did anything in the club after paying and said it was a waste of money, but they get a cord :P

It just flabbergasts me people don’t understand this is a scam.

I received a very official-looking letter from the “National Society of High School Scholars”…sounds official, right?
It was hand-written and even had my high school name written on the front of the envelope. I opened it up to find they expected ME to pay a one-time fee of $60 to join! I thought I was the one who was being rewarded?
At first I thought it was my acceptance letter for “National Honor Society”, but quickly discovered it was anything but. Mr. Nobel Prize man made it seem that I would benefit greatly from this society, but didn’t make any specifics.
I didn’t think it was a scam until I googled it, and discovered this web page full of other people in the same situation.
This is the second time I have been invited to be in some group for my academic achievements that made me pay. The first one I got was for “Who’s Who.”
I think US having to pay to be recognized is a little ridiculous. But is it a scam? Are they just trying to take our money and take advantage of high school students who will do anything to give their college applications an extra boost?

sigh Got one in the mail today. Bumping this way up in case anyone else feels compelled to ask the same question.

I need help? I just finished my freshman year at my high school, and im moving on to being a sophomore. Were in the middle of summer vacation and i got a letter today from “The national society of high school scholars”. They say they want to recognize me for my hard work. But i have to pay a membership fee of $60. It looks real, but i dont know if its a scam. I was just recently scammed for somthing else, and so its hard for me to believe if its true? My family has high expectations in me and they are big in academics. I always get letters from other programs, like the Who’s Who, the nationl student leadership conference, and the people to people student ambassador. Unfortunately, i wasnt able to participate in any of them, due to the costs. I need help in deciding whether i should send the membership fee or not? If it is possibly a scam, like many others? Help ?

I wouldn’t do it. The NSHSS is just an organization that wants you to give money so that it can give you scholarship opportunities. There are hundreds of scholarships out there that are free. All there is to NSHSS is the legit sounding name.

After looking at similar threads, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not a legit scam, but it’s definitely not worth spending money on. It’s not going to help you much, if any, with admissions. Personally, I’ll probably end up putting down Nominated for NSHSS and NYLC though because I don’t have much else for freshman year besides winning AMC for my school, which is lame in itself because I missed the cutoff for the next round or w/e (AIME?) by a couple points. Next year going to be in like 5-6 quality clubs though, so I’ll be good.
