She was accosted, “bullied,” by Wilson students in Tenley. When we came out from a dinner at Neisha in Tenley this fall, a mentally ill homeless man came right up to us and yelled profanities at us. A city is a city. You seem to think that the city of Washington D.C. is a fancy suburban area. There is crime like any other city. Are you kidding me?? The kids have to be cautious, and if AU is going to use the Tenley metro as a stop for the shuttle, they should be on top of what goes on there without constant reporting. (just common sense) Remember, when my daughter’s bike was stolen the campus police blamed her, (not the perpitrator) for her not having a fancier bike lock??? She used heavy cables and a padlock, but that is not the issue.

Why was a police survellance camera installed, outside, at the Tenley/AU metro over the past few months, one of only ten other police cameras in the city, installed to deter crime in Tenley mini, boysx3??? No reasons at all???

http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2008/02/11/GR2008021100027.gif

That’s the list of DC cameras. As of two years ago this February they had 73, so I imagine that number has gone up significantly since then. They were not installed to deter crime, and in the city of DC are considered to be wildly ineffective. "And so, for about 40 hours a week, a small team of officers in the department’s Joint Operations Command Center watches the live feeds from 10 to 15 (of the over 73) cameras. (Police can only get live feeds from 54 cameras.)They choose locations based on the latest crime trends – focusing, for example, on areas in Southeast Washington beset by gun violence. "

The only way they establish the latest crime trends is WITH constant reporting. Ruling by common sense, the DC Metro police would see that Ward 3 (where AU is located) has less substantially surveillance cameras (which are put in potential crime hotspots) than any other Ward in DC including the ones where GW and Georgetown are located. There is crime to be sure, but I have never been a victim of a crime (harassment, pickpocketing or worse) in the two years I have lived here, nor have I ever felt unsafe while riding every color metro line available.

The parents here are some of the nicest I’ve ever met CR, and it’s not because your ideas are different that gets you in trouble, nor because your daughter has had problems at AU – because it’s not for everyone. It’s because of the blatant holes in your argument, and whenever one gets blown wide open, you move right on to the next faux complaint you have because the previous one was no longer viable.

CR,
AU Public Safety issues Crime Alerts to warn students of criminal activity (including bike thefts 9/16/09 which perhaps your daughter missed.)
She and her accosted friends had an obligation to report these to campus security if for no other reason than to warn and protect others. I find it hard to believe that someone who would report a bike theft, would not report “being accosted”. The fact that she chose not to do that is really a poor reflection on her and her priorities.

[Crime Alerts](Crime Alerts)

AU Transfer:
Your info on police surveillance cameras is 2 years old and you think that makes your argument viable??? There are numerous articles on the current cameras, and one was literally just installed at the Tenley/AU metro indicating a crime crime trend. You are always in denial, hence no one likes to post here cause of the bullying and outright denial.

Hello5:

The kids were blamed for their own bike thefts by campus security. What is the point?

Ok…here’s the current list maintained by the Metro PD. Which also overturns your argument — “one of only ten other police cameras in the city.”
[Metropolitan Police Department: CCTV - Neighborhood Locations](http://mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,A,1238,Q,560780.asp)

Also, the one installed at Tenleytown Metro was installed on June 7, 2007 (Wisconsin Ave. NW and Albemarle St. NW)
[MPD Announces Deployment of Five Additional CCTV Cameras - Releases - Metropolitan Police Department](http://newsroom.dc.gov/show.aspx/agency/mpdc/section/2/release/11243/year/2007)

My argument still remains viable. Ward 3 is still the safest ward in DC based on the number of CCTV cameras. There are also none in Friendship Heights showing a lack of crime there as well. Some Wards have even added cameras over the past two years while Ward 3 has remained the same at just 2 cameras.

On a happier note, hope everyone is enjoying the last few days with the entire family together, and that your S and Ds are getting excited to start a new semester.

Cadmiumred, your daughter is gravely disappointed with the AU Art Department, has issues with the social life at the school, and clearly is not cut out for urban living. You, as her parent, are overflowing with discontents about AU, from dorm policies to financial aid philosophy, while spending $50K/yr. to send her there. So my first question is, did your daughter spend the winter break preparing transfer applications, and if not, why not? My second question is, what is the point of your repeated messages here? By now everyone knows that you hate everything about AU. Why continue to post?

AU transfer:

Police external surveillance cameras were in installed at Tenleytown/AU metro as part of the Metro 2009 budget. Only 10 cameras this year, the Tenley/ AU stop being one. Those are the facts according to Metro and numerous newpaper articles on the subject.

Um, AU Transfer I wonder why Metro deemed it necessary to add additional cameras in 2009 at the Tenley/AU metro??? Interesting isn’t it???

Momma J:

You indicated on earlier posts your daughter’s complaints about social cliques and her triple. Interesting. I guess I am am the only one who is not designated on an “open” forum to discuss observances and issues.

My D was detripled a long time ago and has a nice group of friends. She has a great adviser, likes her department, her classes, and the city, and has no fear of riding the Metro or exploring various neighborhoods, armed with common sense, of course. Her initial complaints reflected the normal adjustments of a freshman, and she is now quite pleased with her college choice and anxious to return to campus. Were she as unhappy as cadmiumred’s child, I would be helping her fill out her transfer applications this very afternoon; were I as resentful and bitter about all things AU as cadmiumred is, I would refuse to pay another penny of her tuition. Her and her daughter’s unwillingness to cut ties with AU undercut everything she posts.

cadmiumred, please answer my questions rather than counting cameras: Why is your daughter not transferring? Why are you willing to pay full boat for your child to attend a school you believe to be lacking in every regard? More interestingly, what is the source of your anti-AU vendetta? Did someone there treat you badly in the past, or are you just a bored Cornell student who has found a truly weird hobby?

Oh AUtransfer:
I forgot to mention to check out the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
web page and view the current news, the 2009 report on installed police surveillance cameras, not from 2 years ago. I think you’ll see that I am correct (:

MommaJ:

According to your logic, everyone who ever has complaints should fly the coop and transfer instead of addressing issues that should be evaluated such as quality of education, living conditions, safety etc…not just what hotel wealthy parents should stay in while visiting for a day or two. That is why parents write to me about how they cannot possibly understand the reactions of the few parents on this thread. They are afraid to say what is really on their minds, because of the repetitive negative responses that will be inflicted.

CR,
Please answer,
If your daughter and her friends were allegedly “accosted”, why did she fail to report it to campus security?
What does being accosted have to do with a stolen bike??
Security probably alerted her to the information contained in their crime alert regarding bike thefts and the proper locks and ways to secure a bike, I highly doubt they “blamed her” for the theft.
Once again, you fail to even address relevant questions, interjecting as AUTransfer made reference to, another faux complaint, this time it’s the Metro stop and cameras.

Hello5:

I already answered you question. Why should the kids run to campus security?? When my daughter went to them in earnest , very upset, to report her bike being stolen , she got a reprimand about not having better bike lock, even though my husband gave her a strong metal cable and a padlock. Even if this lock not good enough, why are my daughter and the other kids who there reporting bike theft, given a reprimand when THEY are the victims. She has no motivation whatsoever to report anything again, because the response you get is negative as well as futile. The bike thefts continued. Why should she waste her time and bother. The incident occurred off campus, which they could care even less about or they would look carefully at what goes on at the shuttle stops they drop off the kids.

Continued from last post… The incident with the Wilson students occurred off campus. The bike theft was in front of her dorm.

Mommaj:

Your daughter was not detripled “a long time ago.” It was about the same time as my daughter. You mentioned into November that your daughter couldn’t break into social groups, translation: “can’t make friends”, because friendships were formed during Welcome Week. What in the world does Welcome Week have to do with it? Please do not continually mock my daughter. People in glass houses…(:

Crime Reports report incidents on and near campus. I would think that would include the shuttle stop at Tenley. Why didn’t she report to DC Police? Perhaps they would be more sympathetic than AU Security…

Cad, given your feelings about that steaming pit of crime and iniquity that is American University why haven’t you yanked your daughter out of there and pulled her back to the safe bosom of your home?

Ok, here’s my advice to you: find a new college that has the following criteria:

No crime. That means it can’t be in a city. Actually, it can’t be anywhere, but never mind about that for now.

The administration has to recognize the specialness of your special daughter and give her special consideration in every respect, especially in regards to giving her enrollment preference as a freshman over upperclassmen. Because she is special.

They have to have an outstanding world renown art department, but not actually be an art school, and as previously mentioned, recognize the specialness of your special, talented daughter.

They have to have equal numbers of girls and boys, and the administration must plan lots of fun social events, especially minute dating, so that even the most socially inept have the chance to make contact with those of the opposite gender.

The dorms must have a “lights out” at 10pm policy. That means no noise or frivolity of any kind may take place after that time. And no tripling of freshmen, even for a short period, because students must never face any challenges or inconveniences of any kind ever.

The administration must be willing to hear any and all complaints from helicopter parents, no matter how trivial or how often.

Well, that’s just a start, but I’m sure we can add more to the list as your complaints continue to pour in…
