The new "discussion menu"

that site is hard on the eyes. what we got is much preferable.

Yes, astrix, it’s too dark…

But I have the same “upgrading-the-site” problem on my e-mail. They made the menu in the left side (like cc now), but some time later they made the function “show menu” and “hide menu”. So cc can do the same.

Thanks for fixing the font.

Actually, why don’t you just make another “menu” at the top like the quick links menu. you could put all these new links in there and it would be lot more asthetically pleasing. If you are adding this new discussion menu just for the advertisement, just put it at the bottom or something.

lets be honest here. This new menu is to increase traffic to the CC site, hopefully leading to more purchasing of their services. Also I’m sure someone’s notice the new google text ad! Basically its a move directed at generating more money for CC…now there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that because after all, CC does run this thing. But some of the reasons people come to this message board is because of its relative freedom from such things…now the current “additions” are bearable (and removable thanks to proxomitron!), but any farther and people might start being driven away…

what did you mean by ‘removable’ ? any neat tricks?

well I wouldn’t feel right giving step by step direction to removing revenue generating elements… Find out for yourself! =)

Always remember that anything client side is under YOUR control, should you choose to exercise it. Don’t be a slave to your browser :stuck_out_tongue:

Okay that much is enough as a hint  Off I go…

it’s completely horrible, take it away, take it away…it moves all of the thread halfway down the page, leaving a blank space taking up the first half. soooo bad.

While it does provide some sponsor space, the key thing is to be sure people can easily reach the static content of CC - the articles, interviews, book reviews, etc. Lots of questions posed here in the forum have been answered by admissions experts there. Our old forum had a stationary frame to the left that made it easy to reach the main site.

As time goes on, we’ll try and tweak the navigation links to make them as useful as possible. It’s a tradeoff between keeping them simple and focused vs. including as many as will fit.

babybird, upgrade your browser.

no, i refuse, haha. i can’t do anything on this browser, it’s so sad. :frowning:

I don’t like it because I make my screen smaller so I can read it easier (I don’t have great vision) and this makes the font too dark. blah.

I can’t stand that bar! It really annoys me. If I want to go to the main part of the site, which I rarely do, then I just go. It’s unneeded and makes the site seem claustrophobic. I liked it better the old way.

I never go to the home site anymore. I used to when I first found this site, but the discussion forums are much more useful. I hate this a lot.

Yeah… not a lot of people access the main site, and those who want to will, and they already know how.

I like the idea of putting it at the bottom of the page, because then it’s not so aesthetically inconvenient and straining. It really is bothersome.

1 more vote against the “new” (yet unimproved) layout.

It would be great if it could be oriented horizontally, maybe at the top or something, with just “Main CCs site” links, since I think the forum links are a bit redundant. When you’re reading threads, there’s a lot of blank space at the left, that could be used to stretch the screen out more or center the screen.

…i like rc251’s idea, the side bar is redundant, and if it HAS to be kept, then it should go horizontally on the top or bottom…
