Out of curiosity, how do you know what you hear isn’t true? Where do you get your facts?

This sums up how I feel…
“Disinformation Governance Board”? Even before we delve into the appropriateness of such a board, I have to ask - what genius came up with that name? I do hope that it quietly goes away.
If it is on a “news” show that is mostly opinions (which describes multiple popular ones found on cable TV), there is a good chance that what is on is opinion, which greatly increases the likelihood of it being either blatantly false, or at least bits of truth presented in a very misleading way.
Similar if it is a social media meme.
I read about 10 periodicals across the political and economic spectrum. I read lots of online things ( also all sides of the spectrum). I use common sense and my life experience to suss out hyperbole, rhetoric and politics from actual events. I use my senses to see if photos and documentation are present. I once took a class in college that taught how to read for information and see if graphs were misrepresented, they often are.
In this case, I would refer you to 1984, Gulag Archipelago, WWII (Germany and Russia and their control of media leading up to, during and after) and general European history. The history of Yellow journalism, what I have seen reported the last 5 years. That should be a pretty good start on this topic. For a deeper dive, the Federalists papers, lots of court proceedings re: 1A and philosophers who write about truth and power, Nietzsche is a good one, many others.

It was all but guaranteed that this thread would be filled with inflammatory statements and politicized viewpoints.
For a bit of context, those of you have been here for a while might remember that there was a subforum for politics. I’m not sure how long it lasted, but it was permanently locked when I first joined CC in 2014. There was a reason for that. It was impossible for that subforum to abide by Forum Rules and TOS.
