I just found about about a summer program called The New Jersey Scholars Program that takes place at Lawrenceville. Has anyone attended this program? What do you know about it? How good does it look for college? Is it comparable to Governors School?

does anyone know anything about this?

yeah. its a program for in state kids - obviously - for five weeks at the Lawrencville school, near Princeton University. New Jersey Scholars Program
you must be nominated through your high school - you can't just send in an application on your own. Every guidance counselor in the state should have an application so you need to go through them - 4 essays, a teacher recommendation, a piece of graded written work, a transcript, and a sort of typical ec sheet is required as part of it. and it's all due by January 4th.

oh and its terribly selective - 39 new jersey kids, and they all go to ivies - you can see on the website wehre they all go to school. a buddy of mine did it and went to yale - all his friends are at columbia and upenn, etc. point is, colleges recognize it. this is no harvard ssp

NJ Governor's School is more prestigious/selective than this right?

depends which gov school youre talking about. science, yes. art? not so much. nj scholars is pretty darn selective.

I got into NJSP and NJGS but I chose the latter because it appealed to my academic interests. Don't choose between the two based on college acceptances because you are not guaranteed to get into the same schools as last year's attendees. And don't choose based on how known they are to colleges because in the end it's about what you're going to make of the program. Gov School helped me explore my academic ambitions, and I still value the experience today. I wrote my Common App essay about how the program influenced me, and I know many of my peers did the same.

To answer your questions, it's a great program, but it's structured very differently from Gov School. Yes, colleges like it, but not simply because you got in but because you learn a lot. Both programs are very competitive to get into, so just do your best on both applications if you get nominated, and then compare them once you're admitted.

really is gov school for science @ NJ that selective? cuz i kno ppl who've gotten in who aren't very sciency

Depends on your county and ethnicity.

P.S. I'm not a fan of your location, Narcissa

Did anyone attend this program last summer? How was it? Would you recommend it? What topic did you cover? I'm thinking about applying for this summer. Did anyone attend any earlier programs?

I didn't attend it, (got rejected in the end).... =/

However, my friend attended it last year. She classified it as "nerd camp", but she still liked it.

Each high school nominates 3 people (or at least mine does).

As a side note, I think your ethnicity plays into a role depending on the topic of study. The two Indians in my school made it through to the final round and were accepted, while I was rejected in the end. Then again, it might be just coincidence.

what topics do you talk about during the interview??
