The New NYU Stern BPE Program (Business & Political Economy)

Alright. I'm a sophomore in high school and i have high hopes for college. My favorite colleges right now are U Penn Wharton, NYU Stern, Georgetown, and Columbia. I am very interested in the BPE Program at Stern because I want a business major but i also love politics and economics. It also appears that i can take a Entrepreneurship concentration with this major which is ultimately want i want to be. (I'd like to own my own investment firm.) Something like Merril Lynch ect. Now this BPE Program is very new and there is no feedback that i can find about it yet. I want to know what you guys think of it and if you think that it would rival a degree from wharton. Also i am trying to find some more colleges that match me to apply too. The more i apply the better my chances. I know i want a very prestigous college preferably in larger city with a large class. I'm very social and like meeting new people so a large college and city appeals to me. Let me know what you think. I have my first meeting with a college counseler in a couple of weeks and i'd like to have a college list be then.

Thank You for your replys. They are highly appreciated.

Well, you didn’t say any specific things about what you wanted to know for BPE. But I can tell you that it is pretty prestigious, although, for some people like my friend who was accepted, the international concept was a little too much for him. What I mean is that you’re required to spend 3 or more semesters studying abroad. He had god-like stats.

If you tell me your stats, I can better assess your position and such. Also, you’re a sophomore, so you have WAY too much time before thinking about college. So much will change between your sophomore year and senior year. Right now you might be thinking about HYP, Wharton, Stern, Ross, whatever, but in three years that might all change very drastically.

Concentrate on school.

As far as what i want to know…What do other people think of it…Is it more useful than a regular degree…Is it more prestigious or something like that… Is it harder to get… How is it compared to a degree from Wharton…Just to speak off some examples

And i know I’m only a sophomore but according to my school counselor and parents and just about everyone else… I have to start planning now. Thats why we hired some college specialist that’s supposed to help i guess. But thank you for your reply…I was bored and getting mad that nobody was answering my question.

If you were to apply to BPE would you still get into Stern if you were rejected from the actual program?

IDK. Thats a good question though. However if i was to get into stern but not the BPE Program, i would attend another college like wharton or georgetown or columbia or something b4 stern. (Of course thats only if i got into another college other than stern.

@rgnburd19: Yes, if you apply to BPE, you are considered for both the BPE program and the core business program. For instance, I applied to BPE and was unfortunately not admitted into the program, however I was still accepted into the core business program at Stern.

I have a new question. If you apply to the BPE Program and are accepted. Can you still take a minor, or even dual degree.

I have been doing more research on this program and now i have come up with a list of questions that i couldn’t find an answer to that i am curious about. Feel free to answer them, or ask any questions you have about this program.

So…My Questions

Can i get a minor with this program or maybe even do the dual degree program?

Since there is no traveling senior year, can you do the travel abroad senior year.

How much more selective is this program? What are the standards to get in.

Can you do an entrepreneurship & Finances concentration like in the core program?

How does this program compare to like a degree from Wharton as far as pretentiousness. (In other words, does this program have the “wow” factor that somebody with a degree from Wharton has.

Finally, I know a lot of people recommend Columbia for economics over stern for business but which do you think is better now, BPE from stern, or economics from columbia.

1) Depends which minor, probably no dual degree since BPE will take up most of your time.
2) Probably not
3) This is more selective than normal Stern, but if you apply to BPE, and get rejected from BPE, you can still go to Stern.
4) Concentration?? Maybe, I am not sure.
5) I would say this program is good, but Wharton stands alone on prestige.
6) I would do Columbia

BPE is more selective than normal stern.
I wouldn’t pick Georgetown over Stern for sure. :D

I got into BPE! It is all I have ever wanted for two years- but I will have to sadly decline because of the cost. If you have the money, go for it!

If I may ask, what were your stats? And would you know of the “average” stats of the program? Also, I’ve heard a lot that the program considers your interest in it a great deal. What way did you, and what way would you suggest proving to them that you really really really want to get in?

If you have any questions about BPE-NYU Stern BPE class of 2018 has started a blog that will be all about classes, travel, and any info you need to know. http://www.travelingtorch.com

The BPE program is very prestigious and very hard to get into but so is the regular stern program. Plus there isn’t a difference between in the quality of students in BPE and Stern. In fact a lot of students actually realize BPE isn’t for them just because of the extensive component and the fact that they can’t actually get a degree / major in Finance and therefore opt out of the program.

Its really hard to compare programs like this because not many schools can replicate these kinds opportunities but that said I do know a couple of students who have picked Stern BPE and Normal Stern over Wharton.

If you want to do business I would definitely say Stern over Columbia Econ at the undergrad level. At the MBA level the edge goes to Columbia.
