Who has seen it? Is it as nice as the website previews showed?

Yes, it’s great. My younger son (freshman) is living there, in Talon Hall. His suite is very spacious and well furnished. Each bedroom (there are four) has a nice bed, nightstand, desk and chair, as well as a closet (no door). Two students share each bathroom, which is much better than the older dorms, where one bathroom is used by 4 students. The kitchen area has a full size fridge, as well as a sink and microwave. Lots of cabinets to store kitchen stuff. The living area has a sofa, stuffed chair, and kitchen table with 4 chairs. Each bedroom is separately keyed for security of valuables.

The only downsides I can think of are:

It’s a little farther from campus than some of the other dorms (quad). Depending on your major, and where most of your classes will be held, you might not like the location of the village.

Son has to walk to the extension for his mail, which is west of the village, while the main campus is east. He only makes the hike once a week. I’m surprised they don’t have post boxes right on site.

The building is not wired for phones, making a cell phone mandatory. Not a problem for most.

Hope this helps. I have an older son who spent two years in a Quad dorm, and he is very jealous of his little brother’s living conditions!

Thanks for the info.

Are there places to eat nearby with the meal plan? I wonder why they don’t put the mailboxes in there. Checking our mail was such a part of the dinner routine… wait … that was back in olden’ days before internet and cell phones!

Speaking of internet… is the Village wireless?

I’m getting the impression these dorms are off campus. How do students get to class? Is it walking distance? And good point above. What about places to eat on the meal plan?

And how did your freshman son get to live in these nice dorms? Most colleges only offer the nice dorms to upperclassmen. Glad to hear they let the freshman feel comfortable.

Like that private room and separate keying. Good for anti-theft and roommate girlfriend problems.

My son lives in the “village” dorms which are really beautiful apartments. Unbelievable for freshman. There is also a new dining hall right next to the village as well. These dorms are definitely “on-campus”. they are right by the stadium and near the business school. since my son has most of his classes in the business school, he is a short walk. He loves it!

Sorry for the confusion…The Village is definitely on-campus. It’s just on the western(?} edge, instead of right in the middle, like the Quad dorms. Son walks to all of his classes, no problem.

The dining complex located right in the Village is reportedly great. Kind of like the Student Center, with several quick options, but it also has an all-you-can-eat section.

Just read the up-dated Village description on the Auburn website, and it says mail pick-up is in a centrally located area within the Village. Will have to ask my son if this has recently changed, since he told us he had to walk to the old “extension”.

How far are the Village dorms for the engineering students?

Also, is there a campus bus that takes students from one part of campus to others?

We’ve never been to Auburn, so don’t know how big the campus is.

Montegut

If you are considering Auburn as one of your choices, I would highly recommend a campus visit. The University is a very walkable campus. Students primarily travel by foot, bicycle, or Tiger Transit (bus). Students who live off campus, park in designated areas and then either walk or take the Tiger Transit to class.

Very much want to visit. They are only doing visits on Saturday game days. From past experience with other college visits, Saturday game days are a major turnoff for son.

Have to wait for high school swim season to end, right before Thanksgiving. We may not be able to go until MLK weekend, since Auburn no doubt shuts down during Christmas break.

Am I right? Would it be worth going over there during Christmas break, so son could see the campus?

Looking forward to hearing from any visitors about any campus visits.

Most people L-O-V-E the campus. So it might be worth a trip. We went there when daughter was middle school age for a summer competition. Auburn was at or near the top ever after. Fortunately, it was a good academic fit.

They have done a lot of wonderful things to the campus since I graduated in 83. We went last Spring since we were in the area (Atlanta) in hopes that our daughter would consider it. UVa was a campus she thought no school could ever compare with in the sense of beauty and feeling at home. She left after the visit with Auburn at the top of his list right there with UVa.
She found out yesterday that she has been admitted to Auburn.
I wonder how many Freshman this year actually got in the Village housing and if so when they submitted their housing request? We are going to go ahead and put the school deposit and housing deposit even though she is not certain if it will be her choice since it is in the top 3.

If U of VA was on her list, it is entirely possible that she is eligible for the Honors Program, which would put her in the Village housing.

She is eligible for Honos based on stats that are needed. She just received her acceptance letter in the mail today, but I am leaving it for her to open. Is the Honors College application mailed later? She had seen the acceptance online yesterday.

Are honors students guaranteed housing in the Village?

Also, how do we apply to honors? Do we have to be invited to apply?

Son is NMSF, with a 32 ACT, 4.1 UW GPA, so I’m hoping he’ll qualify.

If a student is a NMF they are guaranteed a spot in honors. I spoke with housing and last year honors students got to pick b4 all other freshman but they have not deceided how they are going to handle housing this year.

From the housing page for The Village - " fourth building houses members of the Honors College (priority goes to Presidential Scholars)."
Will start a new thread on Honors College.

momto4

That is good news to us, but when I called down there and spoke with a nice lady who makes these decisions, I was told that they still haven’t deceided how thay are going to deal with Presidential Scholars or those invited into the Honors College. I do hope you’re right.

If you are NMF, are you considered a Presidential Scholar?

Son only has a 32 ACT, so not qualified for the top award, but was told that the NMF would give him the same award.

Don’t know if that will matter when selecting housing.

The earlier you send in your housing deposit the better. Also, with a 32 ACT and a GPA over 4.0, you will qualify for significant scholarships. The scholarships are listed on the website.

Can we send in the housing deposit yet? I sent in my official deposit, got my email, and all that jazz; I’m just wondering when to send my deposit. I’m fairly confident that I am contention for the OOS full-scholarship (I forget the name), which would include Honors but I still want to get a high priority just incase.

War Eagle, and I wish your kids the best of luck :)!
