The "Non-typical" asian student

I've been seeing the "typical" asian posts lately, with incredible math and science stats, violin and piano, etc. etc.

Would this "typical asian" view impact the view of a "different" type of asian student? Simply, how would they view an asian student who was more skilled in English and Geography, compared to Science and Math, and played something like...bassoon for the band? :)

To be fair and realistic, they probably wouldn't care. It's wonderful that you have interests in that stuff, and I think you would be considered in terms of your interests. But I wouldn't think you'd have a special advantage in those programs BECAUSE you are Asian. This only happens with truly underrepresented groups in a particular field, like African Americans and women in engineering. There are too many Asian 1600's for you to count on English or Geography skills to really differentiate you from the pack. I know plenty of Asians with 800's on the SAT Verbal, SAT II Writing, SAT II US History, and with strong interests in English and History.

It sounds disheartening as hell, but I can tell you while the strong Math/weak English Asian student may be in the majority as a general theme, but there are plenty of really strong all-around Asians in the applicant pool for highly selective colleges. That being said, still, do what you love. If you have strong accomplishments in the areas you like, you will stand out that way, whether or not you are the "typical Asian."

Joey

there shouldn't be any problems that would affect you.
I'd be impress if there's an academic all-american football wrestling or baseball asian compre to the regular tennis or golf as "typical" sports for asians in highschools.

Tennis make sense, but golf???

where I live it's tennis AND golf. volleyball for a select few girls.

and bassoon in band is not really unusual. it would be more unusual if it was bass in a punk band.

Tennis, golf, swimming=asian
Orchestra, band=asian
Asian cultural club…
<2100 SAT=non-asian, not a good thing though

You get the idea.

I remember reading a post of how an asian kid played varsity football (don’t get too surprised, he was a kicker) and used that as one of his major hooks to gain admittance into Harvard. He didn’t get recruited either.
