The *Official* 2009 AP World History Thread

bump! 10char

thanks for the tips cupnoodles:)

For the DBQ, is it considered a bad thing to quote? Should you only paraphrase?

does anyone have any links to good websites that have sample essays?

sorry for another one of these, but if u get an 80%(56/70) on the mc what would u need on the essays in order to get a 5?

I got this from another thread:

Raw Score (including -0.25 for each wrong answer) x 0.8571 =
DBQ Grade x 2.2222 =
Compare and Contrast Grade x 2.2222 =
Continuity/Change Over Time Grade x 2.2222 =
Add them all together without rounding till the end.

74-120 = 5
60-73 = 4
43-59 = 3
27-42 = 2
0-26 = 1

I think the curve changes every year…Not sure about how accurate it is, because then it is way easier than I thought to get a 5.

You would probably only need a ~5 score for each essay.

@chocobok, my AP teacher always said it was best not to quote, but analyze. Be an authority on what you paraphrase and add outside relevant details. Quoting a document doesn’t show that you understand it or present any insight.

cupnoodles - I disagree. Quoting is wonderful to provide the textual evidence. The analysis comes after.

whats the highest amount of points u get on each essay part?

^ the lowest is a 9.

I have no idea for the essays…I need to do like 10 practice ones by Thursday or something, because of now, they are keeping me from scoring a 4 or 5. At least my MC imporved by 13 questions in 2 weeks (I LOVE PR
I have only written one/two DBQs, and no FRQs, and have absolutley no idea how to judge what’s wrong with my writing/how it needs to improve…Would anyone be willing to comment/grade a practice essay for me if I posted one? Or if not, post a sample essay?

oh, correction to my earlier post, 9 in the HIGHEST you can get.

My teacher said that quoting is a waste of time; she said to paraphrase when analyzing a document, though. I’m pretty confident about this test, I’ve been reading through Princeton Review and just took a practice test, got 18 wrong.

haha I’m just making this essay question up because I need to review (I probably will be posting a lot of these over the next few days)
A COT essay about the impact of industrialism on European society. It would probably cover these points, right?:

-Before the industrialization began, there was a small middle class, and a small wealthy class, and HUGE peasant population.

-Due to the industrial revolution, a new aristocracy arose based off of successful industrialists. A middle class formed of managers, accouintants, ministers, lawyers, and doctors (skilled workers) while the working class (factory workers and farmers were on the bottom).

-Because of industrialization, urbanization increased, allowing people to live side by side and witness the inequities between rich and poor. This is in contrast to how it was like under feudalism. The lower classes had been accepting of their place in life because that was the way it had always been. During the Industrial Revolution, people came to realize that they were being exploited

-led to increased social mobility, the abolition of slave trade, but at the same time increased imperialism, as well as Social Darwism.

-before Industrial Revolution, people worked on farms with breaks inbetween seasons, etc.
-After: The factory workers worked in harsh conditions, with 16-hr workdays or more. Children and women were employed, and everyone was underpaid. There was air pollution, and working conditions were extremely dangerous. On top of this, there was no escape and people were forced to work the entire yr. This lead to demoralization.

-Industrialization/capitalism viewed as corrupt, gave rise to Marxism and therefore socialism and communism in countries like Russia
-OR reform (labor unions, Factory Act of 1883) in democractic countries (UK, US)

-also, Agricultural Revolution as well as new food crops from Americas= increase in population.

-and later on, men as wage earners= formation of domestic sphere for women

OK, and now I’m going to talk about a COT for technology leading up to Industrial Revolution.

-Agricultural Revolution that freed 1/2 of workforce made possible by new machines for plowing, seeding, reaping, and chemical fertilzers
-before, use of domestic system for weaving (middleman drop off wool/cotton at women’s house, women made cloth, middleman picked it up and sold it to buyers) but changed due to:
-1733 John Kay invention of flying shuttle (sped up weaving)
-1764 John Hargreave invention of spinning jenny (more thread)
-water-power by Richard Arkwrigt and Edward Cartwright
-1795 Eli Whitney invention of cotton gin
so textile industry was moved to mills near water.

Also steam engine important for transportation, needed coal. Because Britain had lots of coal= industrialized.

Assuming that you stomached reading this long block of print, am I missing any important points about industrialization? What should I be focusing on analyzing etc, in both of those COT’s? The things I absolutely would have to include?

my mc scores have been staying constant, ~40/70 without subtracting incorrect answers. ughh i really need to practice this weekend! i want at least a 4 :/

oh, and for the dbq i recommend paraphrasing (example: what is the author’s claim), then analyzing (POV, possible reasons for the stated claim)

bump10char

is anyone else taking the SAT subject test?

^ The SAT subject test in world history? Yes, but that’s in June (at the earliest), and the AP’s on thursday so I’m not even thinking that far ahead.

hahaha, im sorry dude, but i started laughing; it was soooo from the PR, i loved it.

this is the only test i feel confident in. On my practice exams i got a 5 so I’m really happy about that. Remember on DBQ use ALL of the documents just in case you analyze one incorrectly and they count off for not using all of the documents.

^ Yeah I’m feeling quite confident too. The last practice test i took i got a 57!! This is huge improvement for me because in the beginning (like 4 weeks ago) I was getting like 40/70.
