The Official Amherst College Thread for Regular Decision Applicants

So everything’s submitted, posted and sent (signed, sealed, delivered). And here we are just sitting in front of our computer screens surfing through CC (what’s new), burned out from writing all those essays.

But I gotta say, Amherst College is one of my first choices (I have a few ‘first’ choices… oxymoron much?) and I think it will be great to gather all those first choice-rs and other RD applicants.

So for a start, which essay prompt did you choose? I chose no. 2 about literature and drama. I’m a drama fanatic so that wasn’t hard to choose. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good luck everyone!! Let’s try to keep this thread alive. :)

I took quote nr. 2 as well.

But in retrospect my essay does not really relate to the quote. I wrote something fictional, with me as the protagonist. I think whoever's going to read will think I am crazy and reject me. I loved writing it though

After having submitted the application and noticing what I have done I begin to like Amherst more and more.

Actually, this makes perfect sense. Otherwise, wouldn't you have done EDII if you were completely and thoroughly convinced? I rather like that Amherst is ONE of my son's very top schools because even since last spring when this process began in sincere earnest, he has evolved so much that I think it might be just the best thing that he is, effectually, unable to make a choice until spring!

Yes, the Jeopardy music is playing full blast around here but had he had this decision to make last spring, I can honestly say he might have chosen enitrely different than he would today and that might be totally different than how it might go in the spring.

All I know is that there is enough that he loves about Amherst that if he got in, he'd be over the moon to attend. He has two others like that. Then, he's got three that are middling, but he'd still be really satisfied. And two where he could see himself happy there. Obviously, a range of love going on. :)

He did quote number 3.. kennedy speaking at Robert Frost library. I think it read both intellectual and personal. I would have hoped for more of the latter, but after all, he's an 18 year old boy who isn't much of a huge "sharer." Made this process even harder.

^ that's quite funny because I have a few guy friends who did not write much about himself in the essay.

silence: i think your essay will be more than fine since all they requested was a 'response' to the question. your 'response' might have been a creative one or a vehemently opposing one. yes. I wrote about how wrong the statement was. kinda an awkward approach because i also wrote down my future career plans as 'writer or author'. hahaha..

i think the biggest reason why I like amherst is that it is small, has the right amount of seclusion (im a city person so it'll be good to escape that for a while), has the whole 5-college consortium thing going and that it offers one of the best education in US. But I am extremely worried though because I am an intl student asking for a financial aid. WIth the economic downturn and all that jazz, my chances look slimmer by day. Even though they say they are 'need-blind', who can really trust that now a days?

Every time the administration, including President Marx, has said anything about how the economy will affect the college, they have made it very clear that the need-blind admissions policy will not be affected and that it will be (I guess has been at this point) extended to international students as planned.

I loved writing it though

this is what you hope shines through and as someone who understands that love, I am sure it will.

I applied RD as well! I chose the prompt about stereotypes. These next three months are going to be soooo long. What are you guys doing to keep yourselves distracted? I've got midterms and then i don't know what!

I did the science prompt..and ended up really liking what I came up with, actually. Anyone else?

I did the literature prompt too.

yelle85A: it is going to be very very long... but i think it's going to be better than the 1month wait I endured for early action/decision because my hopes are not pinned on one school. Maybe it will give me a better perspective on the whole college game...? But I have many many things to do like you (including midterms). Actually, my school has this really cool thing called 'extended senior prank' where the seniors plants little pranks throughout the second semester so that will cause a little bit of an excitement. I'm trying to live my life as normally as possible :)

catfish: well thank God if they stick to their word. I'm quite skeptical about being need-blind though because we don't get much statistics based on the needblind admissions. It is also one of those touchy topics that I'd like to believe in. I just HOPE for the best..

it seems like (so far) that no. 2 is the most popular one so far. what was the focus of your no. 2, pineapplelollie?

i did the stereotype prompt. i chose a pretty basic topic, but i hope my writing and my perspective came through.
and the wait is going to be soooo long. i applied to a fairly large amount of realy selective schools. I think i might have set myself up for a very depressing april.

I wanted to pick the stereotyp-quote first, but then I noticed, that there was no way that I would be able to write something fictional about it, and I just love writing fiction.

The next months are gonna be hell. Being an international with good, but not stellar stats, my chances are slim at best, so I will probably make myself ready for a bunch of rejections. Hm, I really don't know how to keep my mind of the decisions, especially after my exams in February.

i'm a science NERD! so I had to choose that one especially since I wrote about my self esteem issues & how science helped my confidence. so beautiful. I wish you guys luck! It's so annoying to wait for those decision letters : ( ; I kind of don't think I have a chance because of my SAT scores but because I applied as a questbridge applicant I didn't have to do the common app or anything, I just had to do the supplement. I love the school though, so beautiful!

Thanks for starting this thread! I can't wait to hear back from Amherst (good news or even bad news) (lol)

I did the literature prompt. It really helped that I love writing prose and poetry, so this actually turned out to be my favorite essay prompt. I wrote about my experience with reviewing submissions for my literary magazine's national edition, and how literature in general moves me, so I hope my personality and nature came through.

Second semester is going to be both awesome and hellish. I'm going to try to distract myself by having more of a social life so that April won't seem so far away. It's somewhat comforting that all we have to do is wait, instead of writing more essays or what not, but I certainly won't enjoy the wait!

haha stentorian, good point. i've been feeling like quite the anti-social hermit these past few months; thank goodness it's almost over!

I applied RD!

I picked quote #5--I think I'm the first one here, haha. I love writing also, which made #2 very appealing, but I actually ended up writing 5 about an english teacher I had and writing and things like that. I was happy with it in the end, but Amherst is soooo hard to get into...I'm not expecting anything.

I applied RD as well and chose the Kennedy quote.

Does anyone here know if Amherst has an acceptance date or acceptance deadline (in other words: will the letters go out by April 1 or on April 1)?

phlibarts: not too sure..

It seems like most of the people liked the amherst supplement. I especially liked the fact that they didn't ask "why amherst?". Yes, I would love to attend amherst, but i've written SO many of 'why' essays that after a while, they all started to sound the same. I think the worst kind of supplement essay question is 'why' questions. The question itself lacks depth and they want students to be deep about writing about how they would love to attend the school that they've never been to or definitely never have attended before (unless for a summer program).

I was wondering, does anyone know actually how many of the amherst students take classes outside the college? (at UMASS, Smith, etc). Is it a common thing to do or is it something that's just THERE. would you be more likely to do that if you pick a particular major..?

mistofolis, I am just a mom of an Amherst student, I'm not sure if this is correct, but I read somewhere that Amherst students took on the average of 1 class outside of their campus (the consortium) during their 4 years at Amherst. I would assume it would depend on your major/interests though.
