Pretty happy this semester. A- in both Chem 1A and Math 54 and a B in Physics 7A(which would have been at least an A- but I made stupid mistakes on the two midterms + final). Turns out you can get Ds(60%) on midterms and still pull an A in the class, because I did so on a midterm for both chem and math, but just made sure to do well on the finals and/or other midterms for the classes.

On the other hand, I wasn’t able to raise up my physics grade, even though physics was originally my best subject too. I think what screwed me up were that the midterms were both concept-intensive and algebra-intensive(concept-intensive meaning that one needed experience with a lot of physics problems to be able to set up the math to solve each problem), and for my first midterm, I skipped all the algebra for the sake of time for 4/5 questions thinking I would still rake in a lot of points and ended up with ~70% of the possible points for each question(which was was the average on the midterm and put me in the B range). I attempted algebra on only the first problem and accidentally made a substitution error and that turned out to be the question where I received the lowest amount of points. The second midterm was ridiculously hard and the average was a 25 out of a 100(didn’t really give me a chance to raise my grade)-- I scored about average again, but there were points I could have gotten if I had read the questions more clearly. I normally reread the questions too to make sure I answered them satisfactorily, but I devoted most of my time on that midterm trying to solve the last two problems, which were the hardest to do and I ended up with 1 or 2 points on 'em. Bad time allocation I guess.

The final for the class I didn’t think I did too bad on until I talked to people that also took the final and realized that I made some dumb mistakes and bad assumptions, and that’s how I ended up with the grade that I got.

One thing I learned is that just because a test states: “[partial credit may be awarded by] telling us how you would do the problem if you had the time, telling us why you believe (in terms of physics) the answer you got to a problem is incorrect, and telling us how you would mathematically solve an equation or set of equations once the physics is given and the equations have been derived. Don’t get too bogged down in the mathematics; we are looking to see how much physics you know, not how well you can solve math problems” doesn’t mean you can skip the algebra or make an arithmetic mistake without sacrificing a decent amount of points.

What I hated the most out of all of this was that the other Physics professor was pretty easy(in his test questions), with his midterms consisting of problems from the homework and/or past midterms from other professors. I think Speliotopoulos modeled one problem total on the first midterm from a question on a past midterm, but it sucks that I didn’t do that midterm…coulda been easy points(and enough to at least go up a step grade).

I want to be challenged, but exposing myself to countless physics problems while students in the other class just practice carefulness during their exams to achieve a high grade is somewhat discouraging.

^

What the frak.

@Handlebars: Less pressure for later semesters. Focusing on keeping a 4.0 is a lot more trouble than it’s worth. You should be happy with good grades, period.

this might sound stupid but where can i find my fall 2010 grades?

you can go to bearfacts
click “academic records”
click “current term grades”
drop down menu choose “final grades”

this is the first semester I’ve gotten a 4.0… and 3 A+ (while taking 5 courses)… xD my life is good.

@eyeheartphysics: haha thanks, that does make me feel a little bit better, less pressure on me i guess. just would’ve been nice to say i got a 4.0 at berkeley though, you know? (like StarryNights)

woah woah woah, I actually don’t have a 4.0 at berkeley o___o I just have a 4.0 this semester… xD lol~

And actually, my first semester, I ended up with the exact same GPA as you for the exact same reason (A- in Econ 1). Currently I have a 4.0 in all my business/econ classes except Econ 1. So it’s still very much so possible for you in the future~ :)

The reason why I finally got my first 4.0 this semester is that I didn’t take any Poli sci classes. Go figure.

Actually, the rest of my ****ty grades (including Bs) came from political science (I finally decided to drop that major this semester). I almost completed the major before I realized that my PS GPA was about 0.3 lower than the rest of my GPA… and was really not worth it to finish the other 2 classes… =__=

@Handlebars: Yeah no problem. I totally understand where you’re coming from. I had a 4.0 my freshman year (I’m a sophomore now and my GPA has tanked!) but it was more stress than it was worth. All spring semester I was worried I was going to get an A- or something (which is ridiculous) because it would ruin my 4.0. It’s good to not have that pressure because in the real world, the difference between a 4.0 and 3.7 is really minimal. Heck, anything over a 3.5 will get you an interview so long as you’re not pre-med/pre-law/looking into grad school all else equal you know? So it’s good that you didn’t get that 4.0, but you got a really solid GPA; it’s probably better than most people’s. :)
