okay, I have a serious question for you all,
how many of you all go to private schools and how many to public schools?
I was just on the parents forum and reading the Nations top ranked HS thread and it got me thinking... why go to a private school? (minus, of course, inner city schools, i understand that arguement, philly schools are some of the worst in the country if not in a magnet school) I go to a public school in the suburbs. its not the best school, its not totally focused on college and being the best, but its a very good school, offers about 20 AP courses, honors classes in every subject, and blah blah, but yea, there are still kids who don't do well, who don't care about school, who won't go to college and are only staying in school because its easier than earning their GED later... but its an environment that is spirited and diverse, and i just dont understand why people go to private school... why is it so important to spend your childhood being in a "driven, focused" school when childhood is about so much more than strictly learning?

Well, I go to a private school. The public school by me is not an inner city school...but it might as well be. I'd say 80% of the students are on drugs there and I knew that I did not want to be in that kind of environment. Dont get me wrong...I'm not innocent myself...but I didn't want to be surrounded by it constantly. The appeal to private schools in Ohio is the environment I guess. For me, my school has about 40 kids in a grade, and I love it (though a few more wouldn't hurt.) We have teachers who care, who we can seriously call on the phone if we need to talk about something, even if its totally not related to school. The public school teachers near me are just about as fast as the students when it comes to running out that door at 3:00 everyday. Thats just my thoughts. Maybe PA has more $ for public school funding. Ohio's funding is HORRIBLE...No Child Left Behind? Hahahahaha, what a sham

300!
doot do do dooooooo!
:-D

hi iplayoboe,
I don't want to pry into your private thread, but I did just read your post and I have some thoughts. (also, I'm a parent w/ son applying to Yale) In our area, the public schools are basically really good, but I have friends who still insist on sending their kids to private $$ schools. In some cases I honestly think that this just makes them 'feel better' in some way, that they are giving their child the absolute best they can, whether it's true or not. And, I've noticed that when it comes to applying to college, the guidance counselors give the kids very individualized attention, which the counselors at my son's school don't have the time for. Sometimes people just want to feel exclusive. Obviously there are some people who have excellent reasons for sending their children to private schools and I don't begrudge them that, but other times I think it's just to feel that they are somehow in an elite class. That's my view as a parent-- I've wondered about the same thing.

hey guys! lalalalalalalala~ where are my ramdom friends? Missed you guys! :)
